Hawkins woman allegedly fires at seven people, including children, for turning around in driveway

Source: Times News

ROGERSVILLE — A Virginia couple who took their five children on an outing at Bays Mountain Park Sunday afternoon were greeted with gunfire shortly after crossing the Hawkins County line in an attempt to take a scenic route home.

Oscar Scott of Rose Hill, Va. told the Times-News that he and his family decided to explore a scenic way back into Virginia through Hawkins and Hancock counties.

Almost immediately after crossing the Hawkins County line, however, they came upon Bays Mt. Road which runs adjacent to the Sullivan County line.

“We came around the side of the mountain and saw a road that turned to the right that said Bays Mt. Road,” Scott said. “We figured we’d take it and see if it came out at Bays Mountain Park. We got pretty far down that road and you could see where it turned into an old log road, so I put the vehicle in reverse to turn around.”

Seven felony counts of reckless endangerment...and $1,000 bail?

She's probably not too big a risk of re-offending...unless you end up in her driveway.

They could just charge her with one count of being an ornery old coot and shootin' at people.

I bet she ends up with a plea bargain to a misdemeanor and no or very little jail time.

There was a jail scandal there a few years ago when an inmate jammed the lock on his cell, and he would go out and make a nightly beer run to the local convenience store for the other inmates, for several weeks until he got caught. Parts of that area are *very* rural (the road where my grandparents lived was finally paved past their house when I was 14 or 15... they got an 'inside bathroom' when I was 12, but we still mostly used the outhouse.) There were some areas that people just *knew* not to go to, since there were still some active "shootin' feuds" among some of the amateur distillers of corn-based alcohol products.

Lots of people in that area are extremely protective of their property, especially if they used to grow Burley tobacco and have switched over to that wacky-tobaccy that makes a lot more money nowadays.

I have family near Morrisburg and I lived there in third grade when my parents got divorced.

I'm not defending this in anyway, but folks who are thinking "neighborhood" haven't got the right picture in their mind. This was 4 miles down a one lane logging road with no other turn off. This is COUNTRY. Rural in a way a lot of folks don't have an image of.

At my grandmothers house you had to make sure you cleared the little frogs out before you brought in a bucket of water from the spring.

eta they were somewhere around here-

Having grown up in the 70s and 80s in VERY rural WV I was shot at for riding my bicycle up the wrong holler road more than once. Granted I don't think they were shooting to HIT me, just letting me know I needed to get off their land.

I remember playing up on a mountain top in a field one day when I heard this buzzing sound, then another, then another. The old man who owned the field I was in was on the other ridge with his rifle, sitting in his rocking chair, on his front porch taking pot shots at me.

No one called the cops, no one freaked out, in fact no one thought this was anything out of the ordinary. That's a cultural divide that most people on DU will have had no exposure to at all.

Now I'm not saying this lady wasn't nuts. There really isn't enough information here for me to determine that, but I am saying that people could really misinterpret her actions.

...because she has had a continuous problem with people tearing up her driveway,” Allen said.

So this will be a "neighborhood beautification" defense? Plant your ground?

Anyone wanna bet no jail time? The Aryans tried this crap over in Idaho a few years back. Lost their property and it bankrupted their ass when the Southern Poverty Law Center got involved. And those folks weren't even disturbing the gravel on their dirt road.

The article said several people were on the porch, yet no one had the presence of mind to take that .22 out of her hands. I wonder if they could be charged as accomplices...
