Dick Cheney Part Of Marriage Equality Lobbying Effort In Maryland: Report
WASHINGTON -- Dick Cheney is part of a lobbying campaign to convince at least one Maryland state lawmaker to back marriage equality, the Baltimore Sun reported on Thursday. Since leaving the vice president's office, Cheney has been increasingly vocal in his support for same-sex marriage, but the extent of his engagement on the issue was not previously well known.
The Sun story, flagged by John Aravosis at AMERICAblog, focused on the fight in the state over Gov. Martin O'Malley's (D) bill to legalize gay marriage. It revealed that Maryland Del. Wade Kach (R-Baltimore) had been offered to chat with Cheney, ostensibly to convince him to support marriage equality.
Kach (R-Baltimore) had been widely expected to vote against the legislation. He told the Sun that he changed his mind and decided to support it after hearing testimony from committed same-sex couples during a hearing last week, which went on for nearly 11 hours. In addition, Kach received some pressure from high-profile national Republicans:

(3,682 posts)May Cheney's support lend universality and success to the marriage equality fight...and may his seeming awakening understanding of justice on this issue lead to a broader and deeper awakening to the terrible impact his choices have had on humanity, and an effort to redeem himself in other ways as well.

(20,137 posts)"Dick Cheney's daughter, who is a lesbian" at the debate in 2004? Because that was during an election. And the right-wing base wasn't supposed to know about it.

It was a completely classless move on Kerry's part.

(10,274 posts)and remember thinking the same thing (Kerry had pretty much held his own in that debate, and then said that because someone on his staff had TOLD him to say it if he had an opening, and I thought "he REALLY didn't need to go there, he's already won this thing..."
As an aside, It occurs to me that MOST of Human Enlightenment begins with the recognition that our kids are people too, that we won't be here forever to defend them, and that after were gone our legacy should be that we worked for them to have a better life than we had. Perhaps this is the case here (and I know, its a BIG perhaps when it comes to Lord Darth Cheney.)

(32,096 posts)If a state wanted to do it then that would be OK. That really is no different than what he is doing now.

(9,992 posts)The fact that his daughter is gay (and simple human decency) should have prompted him to get on the right side of this issue YEARS ago. Cheney is still scum.
