Tornado rips through Ursuline College, destroying gym and doing wide damage (photo gallery)

Source: The Plain Dealer

EPPER PIKE, Ohio -- The National Weather Service confirmed it was a tornado that tore through the Ursuline College campus early Saturday, demolishing the gymnasium, damaging at least three other buildings, uprooting and snapping trees and strewing debris over a wide area.

"We feel blessed that no one was killed, no one was hurt," the school's president, Sister Diana Stano, said as she surveyed damage Saturday afternoon.

The weather service said the tornado, classified as an EF 1 on a 0-to-5 scale and packing winds of 110 miles per hour, developed northwest of the school about 3:30 a.m.

The Cleveland Jaguar club hosts their annual British car show there on the sprawling campus grounds. I'm going again this year (I hope). The event is scheduled for the 1st Saturday of next month.

I looked for pictures, but only found ones with British sports cars in them. I took them because the scenery was so appealing. The grounds really are beautiful.

There's a lake with a huge fountain. I see the trees were uprooted around the lake.

I taught at Beaumont, the Ursuline girls school in NE Ohio, for two years back in the late 1990s, and I knew some of the sisters at Ursuline. My prayers are with them.
