Guilty verdicts in Richmond gang rape

Source: San Francisco Chronicle

Two men accused in the gang rape of a 16-year-old girl outside her Richmond High School homecoming dance were convicted Thursday, nearly four years after the attack in a darkened courtyard shocked the Bay Area.

Marcelles Peter, 20, of Pinole and Jose Montano, 22, of Richmond showed no emotion when the verdicts were read in a Martinez courtroom, but relatives of the men wept in the gallery. Peter's attorney, Gordon Brown, patted him on the back.

The two men's cases were joined together, but separate juries listened to the evidence during the six-week trial before Judge Barbara Zuniga of Contra Costa County Superior Court. The panel for Peter reached its verdicts Tuesday; the jury for Montano took one extra day.

Now, both Peter and Montano face the possibility they will sentenced to 33 years to life in prison for the Oct. 24, 2009, attack outside Richmond High.

"Wouldn't it be funny if that girl were raped by like, five guys right now?" --Daniel Tosh, brainless "comedian"

Sadly, American culture TOLERATES this kind of bullshit.

"but none called police." — Prosecutor John Cope.

All of them deserve jail time.

The world is a sadistic place for women and children and any living thing that can be savaged for sport or the LULZ.

I don't know what his politics are but he has this laugh-at-the- victim/underdog mentality that seems to be the calling card of conservative humor.

It's tacky.

(Of course, it's California rather than Florida ... not surprising)

That said, doing some quick math tells me that the now 20yo was a minor at the time, 16-17 at most. For him to be facing 33-to-life suggests he was tried as an adult. Now THAT ... I really don't care for.

AFAIC, as a society we need to decide at what age a person becomes an adult, and from that point forward, they should be afforded ALL the privileges and responsibilities accordingly (drinking, voting, deciding with whom to have sex, serving in the military, being held to full account for crimes, etc).

And PRIOR to that, they should be treated as minors ... ALWAYS. I'm not a fan of considering people as 'kids' when it serves one purpose, and 'adults' when it serves another.

Anyways, I don't have any sympathy for this jerkwad, mind you, but this is more a 30,000-foot level complaint about the practice of trying minors as adults in general. I don't like it.
