Perry signing abortion bill into law

Texas Gov. Rick Perry will sign his states newest abortion restrictions into law Thursday morning.
House Bill 2, which finally gained full approval from the state Legislature last Friday, will ban abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy, require abortions be performed in ambulatory surgical centers, require doctors performing abortions to have admitting privileges at hospitals within 30 miles of the facility, and require doctors to administer abortion-inducing drugs in personrather than allow a woman to take them at home.
Perry drew criticism from womens rights groups and abortion rights advocates after ordering a second special session to pass H.B. 2.
We heard those bills during the regular session, Democratic state Sen. John Whitmire told MSNBC at the start of the special session. During the regular session, this abortion billwhich is a combination of three bills that were not passedwere blocked for lack of support.

(13,058 posts)it is unconstitutional. Expect an injunction against enforcement of the law to come down pretty fast. Of course that will not mitigate how outrageous it was for the Texas GOP to pass this bill in the first place.

(1,186 posts)I suspect that there are more accidents in gun shops than medical emergencies in Women's Clinics. If Perry is really interested in safety, he should impose the same requirements for gun shops (widened doors and hallways, resuscitation equipment, admitting privileges to nearby hospitals).
Wonder it Wendy would be interested in promoting such legislation.

(9,127 posts)My congratulations to the non-voters of Texas, particularly the ones who think "that there's no difference between the two parties" and "things will continue like they are." IMO, the non-voters of Texas are almost as responsible as right-wing Republicans and wild-eyed Teabaggers for putting Rick Perry and a Republican majority-controlled statehouse in power.

(15,262 posts)because of the number of Republicans. Texans clearly know what the differences are, and now a lot more Texans are aware and energized, plus the youth vote and increasing minority share are about to turn Texas blue again.
I think it is really counter-productive to spread those false memes!
