Democrats push to raise South Dakota's minimum wage
Source: Rapid City Journal
The state Democratic Party announced Wednesday that it has filed a petition to raise the minimum wage from $7.25 to $8.50 an hour, with annual cost of living increases.
If the party can collect 15,855 signatures, South Dakotans will vote on the increase on the 2014 ballot.
"South Dakotans value hard work, but the minimum wage isn't keeping up with the rising cost of living," Zach Crago, the party's interim executive director, said in a statement.
South Dakota is one of 22 states that set the minimum wage at the same level as the federal minimum wage. The District of Columbia and 19 other states set their minimum wage above that rate. The highest is Washington, with a minimum wage of $9.19 per hour.

Other developments in the 2012 Workers' Movement:
- October 2012: The first-ever Wal-Mart workers' strike
- November 2012: Black Friday Wal-Mart strike; also the first-ever "Fast Food Forward" strike in the USA occurs in New York City
- March 2013: Michigan becomes the 24th "right to work" (for less) state three months after Gov. Rick Snyder (R) signed the bill to do so (of course we remember the fast pace the bill was rushed through the legislature); minimum wage in San Jose, CA goes up to $10/hour
- May 2013: "Longest strike yet" for Wal-Mart workers; New York Atty. Gen. Eric Schneiderman launches investigation into wage theft by fast food restauranteurs; fast food workers go on strike in Detroit, Milwaukee, Chicago, Seattle, and St. Louis
- July 2013: Koch Brothers go on an anti-minimum wage campaign of course with some of the most absurd economical claims ever; Bay Area Rapid Transit workers go on a 5-day strike
Now SOUTH DAKOTA is next in the 2010s workers' uprising! Take back the Heartland for the COMMON WORKER, not the CORPORATE THUG.
