House GOP sponsor wants new voting rights law

By LAURIE KELLMAN — Associated Press

WASHINGTON — A key House Republican says Congress should pass a new voting rights law before the 2014 midterm elections.

Wisconsin Republican James Sensenbrenner told a Senate panel on Wednesday that the Supreme Court commanded Congress to update the formula for determining which localities have a history of discrimination in voting rights and thus need Justice Department supervision. Sensenbrenner in 2006 led the law's reauthorization.

He told reporters later that Republican leaders in the House are open to passing a new law before the 2014 midterm elections. He provided no specifics, cautioning that the outcome must be politically acceptable to both the House and the Democratic-led Senate.

Civil rights veteran Rep. John Lewis, D-Ga., urged the Senate to restore the provision struck down by the Supreme Court in June.

I can only hope that this would happen, but the way the republicans and tea party assholes act I can not see it happening.

The devil is in the details. You really think Republicans are going to favor an oversight that would put a damper on Gerrymandering.

with serious felony time

Like striking people off rolls without cause
Not supplying enough voting booths / precincts for voters
Calling / mailing voters to tell them erroneous things like the location or date has changed
Throwing out / destroying registrations of voters they don't like
Mailing voters (like military) not presently at home and then having them de-listed
Not allowing students to vote

I'm sure other people can add to this list of scam tactics the pukes have come up with in the last few years, in addition to the old ones like poll taxes/ tests

but he does have a lot of minorities in his district. WI has been gerrymandered, but his district still has many different minorities up there. That may be why he's all on this. He was the one that led the way last time too. His district is Menominee Falls area.

My understanding is that SCOTUS had the biggest heartburn with the law because it was using data from the 1960's to determine what states to target, is that right?

Has anyone gathered the same statistics from 2012 and checked to see what would happen if they were used, under the same formula or whatever? Would the same states be targeted?

They'll talk a good game about how it'll be 'bi-partisan', but you know 'bi-partisan' in their lingo is the Dems caving to EVERY want the GOP puts forth....

They'll claim they're doing it for the country, but it will end up anyone not in the GOP doesn't get a vote or some such...
