Gibbs: Obama must be ‘careful’ weighing in on Trayvon Martin case

Source: The Hill

Former White House press secretary Robert Gibbs cautioned Tuesday that President Obama must be "extra special careful" in weighing in on the Trayvon Martin case so as not to influence the Justice Department review of civil rights charges against George Zimmerman.

"He is the president of the United States and anything he says or does could be seen as coloring the Justice Department's review of this case, and there's no doubt he wants to give that process some space," Gibbs said on MSNBC. "And I think he also wants to, as he did in the statement, appeal for some measure of calm in all this."

On Monday, White House officials insisted that the president would not get involved in the review of possible federal charges.

"Cases are brought on the merits," White House press secretary Jay Carney said. "The merits are evaluated by the professionals at the Department of Justice."

That Obama expressed some opinion about the Gitmo trials and the guilt or lack of guilt of some "detainees."

If a law enforcement officer gives an unsolicied opinion about the reliability and credibility of a witness, a juror that respects the police might take it.

If your boss expresses an opinion about something that you have to decide on, you may decide to take a second look at his opinion.

The juries are military officers. Obama in Commander in Chief. If your commander expresses an opinion, there's a good chance that you'll take that (improperly) under consideration and give it some weight when it deserves precisely zero.

Holder's a political appointee and most of the DOJ attorneys probably voted for and respect the President.

Politics and the legal system are, IMO, best left unmixed to the greatest extent possible.

1. I've seen 3rd graders speak better than this.
2. No matter what Obama says or doesn't say he's going to get creamed by Pubbies and the media.
3. Gibbs, you were a lousy press secretary-just like 99.9% of them Mr. UMMM.

and found guilty. But in this country I would prefer that the President does not involve himself in pending criminal cases.
