Source: Richmond Times-Dispatch

ARLINGTON, Va. — A snake that slithered into some electrical equipment apparently caused a power outage for 10,000 customers in Arlington and Alexandria overnight.

Dominion Virginia Power says the reptile disrupted the electricity substation on Four Mile Run just after 11 p.m. Saturday.

One day it got free and I searched and searched for it, finally finding that it had crawled through a tiny tear in a stereo speaker and had wrapped itself around the disk. I guess it like the vibration or the magnetic field.

They are good pets. They don't bark or shit on the carpet. I had to get rid of them because they were each 7 feet long and I lived in a tiny apartment. So I donated them to the Dade County Junior College hands-on program for kids.

Most people wouldn't believe how many power outages are caused by animals. Snakes, birds, squirrels, and raccoons are the most common, although I've also seen a cat involved in one.

Fire ants also like electrical wires. I've seen them take out power to computer systems and buildings.

A squirrel once made the misstep of putting one foot on the transformer, and one on the grounded power-pole on our property, resulting in a huge pop and his demise ... but he did manage to cut the power to our house in the process. But 10,000 customers out from one snake?--- if a snake's gonna go, they may's'well go with a bang.
