In Statement on Zimmerman Verdict, Obama Calls Trayvon Martin's Death a Tragedy

@BreakingNews: In statement on Zimmerman verdict, Obama calls Trayvon Martin's death a tragedy; 'we are a nation of laws, and a jury has spoken' - @NBCNews

OBAMA STATEMENT ON ZIMMERMAN CASE

Posted on 07-14 at 18:39:10 CST

Statement by the President

The death of Trayvon Martin was a tragedy. Not just for his family, or for any one community, but for America. I know this case has elicited strong passions. And in the wake of the verdict, I know those passions may be running even higher. But we are a nation of laws, and a jury has spoken. I now ask every American to respect the call for calm reflection from two parents who lost their young son. And as we do, we should ask ourselves if we’re doing all we can to widen the circle of compassion and understanding in our own communities. We should ask ourselves if we’re doing all we can to stem the tide of gun violence that claims too many lives across this country on a daily basis. We should ask ourselves, as individuals and as a society, how we can prevent future tragedies like this. As citizens, that’s a job for all of us. That’s the way to honor Trayvon Martin.

As POTUS. It's not his style to be a firebrand anyway. Obama's is the voice of reason and "let's be cool and decent to each other and move on." What else could he say, really?

I wonder how the other side perceives it.

By itself, this is a classy, appropriate statement by the president.

But maybe Obama needs to take a look in the mirror. Cenk Uygur brought up this interesting scenario last year on The Young Turks "What If Trayvon Had Died In A Drone Strike?"

And explain why the bankers haven't even gotten a day in court yet?

We should have progressed way past the point we are today, where the evidence doesn't even matter because the jury is White.

Where you don't have any rights if you are brown.

Rather than saying "and a jury has spoken," he should have said that the jury's decision was a travesty. And he should have said that he has instructed his justice department to pursue a case against Zimmerman for civil rights violations.

helping to stem the Tide of Gun Violence in our Communites. PBO acknowledged that "gun violence caused this tragedy.

As far as the DOJ .. that has procedures that will need to followed and we'll see what happens with that.

What the fuck!? These troglodytes have decided that walking home from the 7 Eleven with candy is a crime??
Or perhaps the crime they are referring to is the crime of being black?

The perversity of the conservative mind has absolutely no bounds.
Why the hell are these monsters out walking in the daylight.
They should be hidden under their rocks the way they have always been before.

There seems to be some black people (not myself) who are angry. They don't think Obama went far enough in his remarks.

But when I look around here and elsewhere, everyone thinks it was a unifying statement.

Again, the guy can't win for losing.

I sometimes feel sorry for him.

People unfairly expected him to be the Messiah and when he wasn't (or can't be), they turn on him.

In that case, Mr Constitutional Scholar, FORCE THE NSA TO STOP COLLECTING WITHOUT A WARRANT AND DESTROY ALL THEIR ILLEGALLY COLLECTED DATA.

Then
Close Guantanamo
Restore the 4th amendment
Jail Bush Cheney et al
Jail the banksters
Restore illegally foreclosed homes to their rightful owners at the banksters expense
Restore equal protection
Force all gun sales to require background checks and insurance for the buyer
Restore transparency in government
Repeal the Patriot Act

In short, restore the law to t his country, not the bastardization that calls itself the law today.
