Toshi Seeger Passes
Source: Sing Out!
Toshi-Aline Ohta Seeger, wife of folk music icon Pete Seeger, passed away overnight on Tuesday, July 9th. She was a mother, an organizer, an activist and filmmaker
and an essential part of all of her husbands work. She was 91.
As much as Pete is a consummate dreamer and optimist, Toshi had a strength and brilliance that was at least his equal. Theres was a true partnership. Without Toshis counsel and support, and always outspoken and direct opinions, its clear to anyone who ever met these two remarkable people that, without Toshi, Pete would never have had the foundation and freedom to do the work that made him so legendary.
But Toshi, despite her profound wisdom, strength, morality and courage, was also extremely modest and self-effacing. Often rebuffing attention paid to her, and always doing a loving job at making sure that Pete was always grounded and clear about how his work, his missions, were always bigger than a single man or woman.
Toshi was born in Munich, Germany, to an American mother and a Japanese father. Her parents brought her to the U.S. when she was 6 months old, as soon as it became legal for the two to be married here. They found an apartment in New York City, where her father found work as the buildings caretaker.

adieu
(1,009 posts)the other passes soon after. I hope, for the sake of our country and the world, that Pete has the internal fortitude to push onward. He can't love mankind as he loved his partner in life, but we humans can love him as much as we can to sustain him.
Pete, stay on and push us.

(20,219 posts)I actually interpreted onstage with Pete Seeger at Hudson Clearwater Fest a LONG time ago.
Had my own stuff going on, was very unaware. But it was a privilege and, now I realize, an honor.
Mystical, the connections between us all.....
prayers for Toshi Seeger...and for Pete Seeger as well

(12,471 posts)Many of us here in the Hudson Valley knew the Seeger family, and knew Toshi. She was Pete's anchor, the Earth under his feet. She was such a wise, caring, sometimes cranky, but always forgiving woman, it is a great loss to many of us.
I send the sincerest condolences to Tinya, Mika, Danny, Kitama, Tao, and anyone else who I have forgotten.
I know that Tinya was taking care of Toshi at home, and Tinya deserves a ton of credit for caring for her mother when she was going through this illness.
RIP Toshi,
our hearts and souls are with you.

(2,252 posts)What a glorious example they have set for us by their lives.
Sunlight glancing on the water,
Life and death are all my own,
Yet I was never alone.
Life to raise my sons and daughters,
Golden sparkles in the foam,
And I was not far from home.

(21,816 posts). . .and as a Clearwater Festival volunteer, I always remember her riding around in the golf cart, coordinating things and holding court at the Litter Picker/Recycling/Zero Waste station.
Of late, I hadn't seen her (due to illness), but apparently she was at the festival a few weeks ago. I received a photo of her with Pete listening to the music, but unfortunately I seem unable to paste a copy of it for here.
She was the rock, the steady ground for Pete's visions of a cleaner, healthier, more peaceful environment, and a better world.
Fair Winds and Safe Passage, Toshi.

(12,471 posts)It says a lot for her. She was quite the activist, and homesteader, and mother, and wife.
It is a great loss that she passed on, but she lived a full life, and it was her time.

(50,254 posts)They were inspired, in part, by Pete and Toshi's relationship(the name of the song is "Left-Wing Wife"
When the phone began to ring her hands were in the dishes
Her feet were in her slippers and her head was full of wishes
She sighed and dried her hands and took the baby from it's cup
Lifted the receiver but the caller'd given up
She changed the baby's nappy put the dinner on and in
Put the garbage out the laundry and when the phone began again
She quickly ran to answer it and tripped over the toys
Scattered around the kitchen by her tri-bob little boys
She lay there in a daze upon the kitchen floor
She thought about the fighters who get up and come back for more
She thought about his sanity and the book that she was writin'
The phone continued ringing and the kids have started fightin'
She never reached the phone cause the baby started crying
Dinner started burning it was time to do the iron
And then once again the phone began
"May I speak to Earl"
My husband isn't home he's gone out to save the world
The oppressed the underprivileged the exploited and the needy
If you see him tell him "come on home,
His dinner's ready"
