White House says will not immediately cut off aid to Egypt
Source: Reuters
(Reuters) - The White House said on Monday it is not in the best interests of the United States to immediately change its aid program to Egypt, where President Mohamed Mursi was removed from office by the military last week.
The U.S. government is not yet prepared to label the Egyptian military's overthrow of the government as a coup, a decision that would determine whether U.S. aid to the country would continue, White House spokesman Jay Carney said.
"There are significant consequences that go along with this determination and it is a highly charged issue for millions of Egyptians who have differing views about what happened," Carney told reporters at a briefing.
"We are going to take the time necessary to review what has taken place and to monitor efforts by Egyptian authorities to forge an inclusive and democratic way forward," he said.

I hadn't thought of that.

(13,184 posts)There is NO QUESTION this was a coup, no matter how much popular support it had. US law requires us to cut off assistance to countries that have undergone coups. There is a "national security" exception ("How conveeenient," says the Church Lady), but I see that Carney has not invoked that. Instead, he is just playing semantic games.

So the tap dancing should be worthy to say the least, since just dodging the term coup détat is irrelevant to the that particular subsection of the law.

(2,693 posts)Laws are clearly meant to only be followed by the peasants, there is no reason the US should be inconvenienced by such trifling regulations such as laws. Surely no one will mind if we ignore the law, and besides even if they do, who cares? nothing they can do about it anyways.

(23,483 posts)And the concept of coups always being bad and democracy always being good is nonsense anyway. There are signs that the military government in Egypt is acting decisively against terrorism and religious extremism, and that is a good thing!
But it makes me queasy nonetheless. This should've been a last resort instead of the first option. Morsi was deeply unpopular, it's doubtful he would've survived the next election. This coup should've happened at the ballot box.
