Egypt's Morsi offers consensus government

as an army deadline urging him to meet the protesters' demands expired.
"The presidency envisions the formation of a consensus coalition government to oversee the next parliamentary election," his office said on Wednesday in a statement on Facebook.
The statement reiterated that Morsi held opposition parties responsible for obstructing a political initiative that would also set up a panel to prepare amendments to the constitution passed into law last December.
Egypt is bracing for a showdown between the military and Morsi, who has rejected an army ultimatum to end a political crisis with his opponents, who have called for his resignation.

Morsi appears to have pushed his luck by focusing on the MB's goals, rather than building a national consensus for a functional government structure.

(42,239 posts)You can keep stripping Presidents of their power and holding new elections ad infinitum. Fact remains Morsi was democratically elected.

(26,404 posts)What is being forgotten is that back in November, Morsi set himself up where he now rules by decree. "Unlimited" powers to protect the nation and did this to push thru a Constitution which tried to tilt power to himself and the MB.
Not democratic anymore. The Army is closer to supporting Democracy here than Morsi and the MB.

(101,368 posts)The Freedom and Justice party, the political wing the Muslim Brotherhood, has refused an invitation to meet the head of the army, according to Reuters.
"We do not go to invitations (meetings) with anyone. We have a president and that is it," said Waleed al-Haddad, a senior leader of the FJP told Reuters.
A spokesman for Morsi said the president believed it would be better to die "standing like a tree", defending the electoral legitimacy of his office, than to go down in history as having destroyed Egyptians' hopes for democracy.
Saying that Morsi was not seeking to cling to office for its own sake, spokesman Ayman Ali told Reuters that, in his overnight speech to the nation, the president had defied calls to resign in order to "defend the democratic system".
"It is better for a president, who would otherwise be returning Egypt to the days of dictatorship, from which God and the will of the people has saved us, to die standing like a tree," Ali said.

So his key supporters are not looking for any form of consensus.

It's a very odd "democracy" that is delivered by tanks.
