Study: Growing number of children sexually abused via webcams

Source: Annabel Roberts, Correspondent, NBC News

LONDON - The number of cases of children in developing countries being sexually abused in front of webcams in exchange for payment to their families has risen sharply in the last 12 months, British experts warned Tuesday.

Sex offenders are targeting vulnerable families to organize live access to the sexual abuse of their children using Internet video-stream services such as Skype, according to a study by the UK's Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre.

"This is a problem that is extremely worrying that has emerged over the last twelve months - and is increasing," said Kate Fisher, an analyst with the CEOP.

"They spend time engaging with families, they facilitate the abuse with the family then return to their home country and pay the families and send instruction for that abuse to be put over the webcam", Fisher said.

Say you're the parent of a kid who is a potential victim. You love all your kids, but you are so poor that your whole family is in danger of starvation. Payment for abusing one kid may be enough to secure food for the family for some time into the future. So one child suffers horribly, but several lives are saved.

I'm not saying these parents are making the right choice. But I'm glad I don't have to make it.

Could be that whoever is offering them the money is willing to provide them with a computer and Internet access to make the scheme work.

And despair fuel the most depraved acts. How sad. I can only hope the consumers of this smut and the distributors are caught and rehabilitated. The sad thing is I think it may be hard wired into their brain as their genetic sexual preference. Then they can only be kept away from regular society.
