Omaha firefighter Brock Borhart was tending to Justine Dubois, while his partner, Julianne Moran, drove the ambulance to a local hospital, sources say.
Dubois, 24, pulled a gun on Borhart, who was shot in the abdomen while wresting the gun away, according to sources with knowledge of the case.
Authorities described Borhart's injury as a superficial wound.

The woman who police say shot a firefighter inside an Omaha ambulance Monday was connected to a stolen vehicle, and authorities question whether the epileptic seizure she said she experienced was legitimate, a preliminary investigation suggests.
Justine Dubois, 24, may have been fueling a stolen vehicle at a gas station in the minutes before police and firefighters encountered her, authorities said. No further details were being made available Tuesday night.
Police have not identified the victim, but according to sources with knowledge of the case, he is Brock Borhart.
He was tending to Dubois while his partner, Julianne Moran, drove the ambulance to a hospital, the sources said.
