Dolan Sought Vatican Permission to Shield Assets

Source: NY Times

Files released by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Milwaukee on Monday revealed that in 2007, the diocese’s archbishop at the time, Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan, requested permission from the Vatican to move nearly $57 million into a cemetery trust fund in order to protect the assets from victims of clergy sexual abuse who were demanding compensation.

Cardinal Dolan, now the archbishop of New York, has in the past emphatically denied seeking to shield church funds as archbishop of Milwaukee, and he reiterated in a statement on Monday that these were “old and discredited attacks.”

However, the files released Monday contain a letter he wrote to the Vatican in 2007, in which he explained that by transferring the assets, “I foresee an improved protection of these funds from any legal claim and liability.”

The Vatican moved swiftly to approve the request, the files show, even though it often took years to remove known abusers from the priesthood.

Something about "bearing false witness?"

Hey, I didn't write the rules!

on edit: changed "got" to "go"

"Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor."

In other words, knock off the vicious gossip.

Back in those days, people could lose their freedom, their livelihoods, their families, even their lives due to vicious gossip.

Vatican City

Pope Benedict XVI's resignation was "a great example" of what it means to follow one's conscience through prayer, Pope Francis said during his Sunday Angelus address to pilgrims gathered in St. Peter's Square.

Following one's conscience doesn't mean chasing after one's own self-interests; it calls for listening to God, understanding his will and carrying out his plan with determination, Pope Francis said.

Pope Benedict provided a "recent marvelous example" of following one's conscience, Pope Francis said, evidently referring to the retired pope's decision to leave office.

"Pope Benedict XVI gave us this great example when the Lord led him to understand, in prayer, what was the step he should take," Pope Francis said. "He followed, with a great sense of discernment and courage, his conscience, that is, the will of God, who spoke to his heart."

Conscience? Guilty conscience? Could we please inquire why his conscience told him to resign?

What a bunch of baloney. Infallibility? Sorry, but that's a bit unbelievable. Why not just apologize for a mistake like any other human being?

I don't want to offend Catholics, but what?

their organization gave us such great parties like the Spanish Inquisition, the destruction of the Maya, hangin and torture of midwives, murder of women (accused of witchcraft) in many parts of the world, an increase in AIDS in Africa, starting multiple deadly, and foolhardy crusades, and so much more!

I say, and especially to any blindered idiot who follows this evil group, go ahead and offend.

that never worked a day in their lives and they live on the dole, sucking up dollars from the suckers who put money in the basket every Sunday. I was one of those suckers for years as a kid, and I want my money back.

I had no idea the money was spent on condoms, lube, sleazy motels, bribes to shut up their rape victims or victims parents, lawyer fees, and judgment payoffs. These scumbags need to be jailed.

Catholic cardinals, bishops, and other church hierarchy live like kings/princes in total luxury while not earning an income at the Vatican. The upkeep for the Vatican is tremendous with their cathedral, churches & chapels, art museums, archives libraries etc. Where does the $$ come from to maintain it all??

He needs to stand trial. He's a money laundering crook, a protector of abusers and an abuser of the sexual assault victim's rights.
I hope someone has the wherewithal to take up this struggle against the abuses of this institution.

And I'm a Catholic! And an ND grad. Dolan is the worst possible excuse for a bishop. Every word out of his overstuffed face clarifies what a creep he is. I only hope he continues to speak out on any number of subjects (gay marriage especially) since he only helps raise awareness for how awful a person he is.

trying to save Dolan's ass?

They are painting him as the hero, stopped by a stubborn vatican burro-cracy, while he was the hero trying to prevent more cases of abuse.
Proof that the media still swallows crap whole, when it involves the NSA, the Catholic Church, or other powerful organizations.

What a load of shit. He hid funds to prevent those kids he and his ilk damaged from recovering anything.
