Soledad OBrien Joining Al Jazeera America
TOM KLUDT 2:13 PM EDT, MONDAY JULY 1, 2013
Soledad O'Brien, the former CNN morning host who gained some prominence during the 2012 election for her tough interviews, will join Al Jazeera America as a special correspondent, the network announced Monday.
In her capacity at the network, O'Brien will produce segments for the news magazine program America Tonight" as well as hour-long documentaries.
I look forward to beginning a relationship with Al Jazeera America, which has made a commitment to producing quality programming and pursuing underreported stories, OBrien said in a statement, according to Politico.
O'Brien left CNN earlier this year as part of the struggling cable news network's reshuffling.

(26,293 posts)in your opinion which would be the best to say they are most like of the following three?
NBCNews (formely MSNBC)
CNN
Fox News
SkyDaddy7
(6,045 posts)The BBC...They do really good reporting on international stories from the Middle East to Bangladesh they cover the globe as good as if not better than the rest. Can't wait to see what Al Jazeera America will be like...I would imagine not much different than how they tackle international news. They will bring the heat to the current media we have now which can't hurt!!

(10,303 posts)SkyDaddy7 suggested CNN International... yes CNNI is an improvement on CNN USA, but some CNN USA shows do make their way to CNNI - but their best bits are the non-US programmes.
I say BBC World News is a good relation to Al Jazeera English. They feel similar in presentation style, are generally "hard news" for the first half hour, then a feature piece for the second half. Plus BBC DNA is in Al Jazeera because when Qatar was starting up Al Jazeera, the Saudi's shut down their BBC Arabic joint venture. Thus Al Jazeera was in the position to offer ex BBC talent work on their new station.
IMO MSNBC/NBC News and Fox News are more opinion channels than actual news channels. CNN is the best of the bunch for actual "news", though for hard news, sadly you need to look beyond the USA.

(22,000 posts)Things like The Situation Room, and the other crap still are shown internationally (we just see it on a tape delay). News Stream with Kristie Lu Stout is good and I don't think they get that in the US.

It's sad that it dwindled down to almost nothing.

(39,909 posts)It is a sad statement about the steep decline of our country into a Surveillance/Security/Propaganda State when the most reliable source of news and political commentary are RT, Al Jazeera, and Comedy Central.
This was predicted when Bill Clinton signed the Telecommuniations Act of 1996.
He signed it anyway to much celebration among the RICH Corporate Moguls sponsoring this monster. Their "investment" paid off times a million.
The Act, signed by President Bill Clinton, represented a major change in American telecommunication law, since it was the first time that the Internet was included in broadcasting and spectrum allotment.
One of the most controversial titles was Title 3 ("Cable Services" , which allowed for media cross-ownership. According to the FCC, the goal of the law was to "let anyone enter any communications business to let any communications business compete in any market against any other."

(511 posts)Ms. O'Brien is fully capable of maintaining the news standards of Al Jazeera.
I just hope that they don't decide to do an "American" version of their show. Al Jazeera has been a staple of my world political/social information gathering process for a long time.
CNN World is miles away from CNN in America too.

(20,453 posts)As Current maintains it's format of nightly political news shows, an intelligent group, since it's inception (too bad Keith left), I'm wondering who's applying strategy to a very progressive number of documentary and news programs.
I don't know any other network that has strung the particular combined talent there.
