Bush says ‘civil liberties were guaranteed’ under his NSA Internet surveillance
Source: Raw Story
Former President George W. Bush is insisting that a National Security Agency (NSA) Internet surveillance program started during his administration guaranteed civil liberties, and that Edward Snowden damaged the country by leaking details about it.
In an interview with CNNs Robyn Curnow published on Monday, Bush was confident that the Obama administration will deal with Snowden and the fallout from his leaks.
I think he damaged the security of the country, he explained. I put the program in place to protect the country, and one of the certainties is civil liberties were guaranteed.
The former president added that his program had found the proper balance between privacy and security.
Bush said that he could care less that polls showed more Americans now viewed him favorably.

Bush wins hard-fought battle after Senate immunizes telecom companies that illegally opened their networks to the Feds. There's a chance a suit against AT&T could continue.

The Democratic-controlled Senate handed President Bush a major political victory on Wednesday by voting to derail lawsuits against telecommunications companies that unlawfully opened their networks to the National Security Agency.
Senators voted 69 to 28 for the bill, which would rewrite federal wiretap laws by granting retroactive immunity to telecommunications companies as long as the government claims the request was "lawful" and authorized by the president. ...

Opponents of the bill said it would allow Bush to cover up illegal warrantless wiretapping. "If Congress short-circuits these lawsuits, we will have lost a prime opportunity to finally achieve accountability for these years of law-breaking," said Sen. Russ Feingold, a Wisconsin Democrat who is a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee. "That's why the administration has been fighting so hard for this immunity."

(750 posts)It is true Snowden probably broke the law. However, from my view or likely from other citizens what Snowden did is break the cycle of secrets in government profiteering.
Money is the whole issue. All those in the Congress and Senate, Supreme Court, or other government lobby jobs are millionaires. Even the Journalist is six figure people. The way to perpetuate the one percent money machine is to perpetuate this secret money profiteering scam political persons are totally intertwined in.
Ladies and Gentlemen of America just as Bush said he put in place protection of liberty and privacy for you and me and especially for the one percent citizen. A secret government run subcontracted agency that can hire an individual for whatever reason to sneak and spy and tabulate stuff from the largest business industries in communications that process data when compiled tell your buying habits, what stores you go to, medical needs what doctor you seek, your car repair what car you like, where you live, what kind of job you have, and your political preference, besides the groceries you like, and clothes you wear, or where you take your girlfriend out to dinner.
Now this entire paradigm has done in secret likely with the blessing of the Congress and the Senate gives a compelling reason for an endless supply of professionals to participate willingly and wantonly profiteering in money and data. Very good reason to label the system as too big to fail.
Yes, just as Al Qaeda recruits are offered seventy five virgins in the afterlife. Here America offers an endless supply of money to be made that money talk like free speech. Getting your virgins in this life is a better deal. This is an incredible system of whole corruption identified by Snowden where he risks his life because others are more than willing to tap the system for whatever they can. Ladies and Gentlemen of America Edward Snowden could very well break this cycle of the secret profiteering in government corruption.
