Appeals panel says Fremont (NE) immigration law legal

A Fremont ordinance that prohibits landlords from renting to illegal immigrants was reinstated Friday by the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
The Appeals Court judges voted 2-1 to overrule a February 2012 decision by U.S. District Judge Laurie Smith Camp, who ruled the ordinance's housing provisions conflicted with federal housing law and would make it more difficult for federal authorities to enforce immigration laws.
Camp had let stand portions of the ordinance that require federal employers to check a federal data base known as E-Verify to ensure their hires are legal residents of the U.S.
Fremont Mayor Scott Getzschman said the city will review the ruling with its attorneys and will follow their guidance about when to begin enforcing the ordinance.
