Infamous member of New Black Panthers arrested in New York

... Shabazz, 41, whose real name is Maruse Heath, is best known for sparking a federal probe for voter intimidation after he brought a billy club to a North Philly polling place on Election Day 2008.

But on Thursday night, police in New York say they spotted him wearing a bulletproof vest in Harlem, stopped him and found him carrying a loaded, unlicensed handgun. He was jailed on $75,000 bail on charges of illegal gun possession and the illegal wearing of body armor ...

Oren Segal, director of the Anti-Defamation League's Center on Extremism, said Shabazz is one of the more outspoken of the New Black Panthers, a group Segal said is the most "militant, anti-Semitic African-American organization in the country."

"It's something to say if you look at the entirety of its membership that King Shabazz is one of the most vile in his language," Segal said. "But as absurd and offensive as his language is, he has every right to say what he thinks. However, when you unlawfully possess a weapon, that is illegal and then you're going to get in trouble" ...

Since when does the Government get to make it illegal for a citizen to do something passive that protects their life? It is like the Government is using the law to give the police the power to kill citizens.

That's another thing, they're not bullet proof vests, they won't stop a typical rifle round, nor do they protect against a knife attact, they're designed to stop your typical handgun round.

a concealed weapon that would be a crime and according to the PA criminal code, possession of body armor would also be a crime:

§ 907. Possessing instruments of crime.
(c) Unlawful body armor.--A person commits a felony of the
third degree if in the course of the commission of a felony or
in the attempt to commit a felony he uses or wears body armor or
has in his control, custody or possession any body armor.

the wording hinges on if he is charged with felony possession of a firearm

Please don't even consider trying to prepare a stage for idiot race-baiting, howling, gibbering from right-wing racist lunatics who have moved into D.U. to stay for the rest of their meaningless lives.

Pointless and bizarre through the eyes of someone who watched fools trying to spread around panic concerning groups of dissidents in the 1960's. The people have far better things with their time than to cultivate grudges and hatreds toward new groups of people about whom they know nothing.

You should stop telling people what to do--you come off like a bully. Respond to the article, don't make bogus accusations about people.

The KKK, Aryan Brotherhood, New Black Panthers are racist political formations.

The Crips, the Bloods, and the MS-13 are ethnically-based criminal gangs, with no politics as far as I know.

(2) Following my general rule-of-thumb, I probably wouldn't have posted this story, given all the crazy wingnut howling about the NBPP in the Duke Lacrosse case and in the 2008 elections -- but somebody else mentioned NBPP in a thread I was reading, I started to do some follow-up research, and accidentally hit the this as current news

(3) I don't like NBPP, but they're a tiny little group of crazies: they have nothing whatsoever to do with the original BPP, as far as I can tell, and IMO they usually don't deserve too much attention

(4) OTOH this is a story about yet another crazy with a gun -- a subject we in the US maybe should be paying more attention to, given the more or less constant senseless gun slaughter

(5) So, on balance, I thought it might be a reasonable LBN post that DUers would find informative

(6) I'm glad you're concerned about the new and frightening covert attack on voting rights, cuz I am too: I've spent hours and hours phone-banking in recent weeks trying to beat back the wackos Republicans voter suppression bills in the NC legislature

walking through a southern city wearing body armor would everyone on this board give him a pass? Probably not, you would say he is some right wing nut job and you would probably be right. Well this guy is no different because he was black, he is a nut job all the same. Oh and lets not overlook the fact he was carrying a gun with him. The guy is a racist who wants to kill "everything white." Sorry if I don't jump on the defense bandwagon here.
