KABUL, Afghanistan A complex attack involving gunfire and explosions began early Tuesday morning in an area near the United States Embassy, the International Security Assistance Force headquarters and the presidential palace.
At least seven explosions were heard by people in nearby houses in the first 10 to 15 minutes of the attack, which began a little after 6:30 a.m. local time, the International Security Assistance Force said in a Twitter post. Its headquarters was locked down, and staff members were alerting those in the area via Twitter, e-mail and loudspeaker blasts to shelter in place.
Local journalists reported that the fighting was near Ariana Square, where journalists were scheduled to gather to go through a security check in preparation for a meeting with Afghanistans president, Hamid Karzai.
