Jan Brewer: Senate Immigration Bill 'Victory for Arizona'

Source: ABC News

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer (R) became persona non grata for many Latinos in 2010 when she backed a law meant to crack down on illegal immigration.

But now, Brewer is voicing support for the Senate's bipartisan immigration bill, which would grant a path to citizenship for many of the undocumented immigrants targeted by the 2010 Arizona law, known as SB 1070.

Brewer spoke kindly of the bill co-authored by both of her state's senators, John McCain (R) and Jeff Flake (R), during an interview on Fox News this Sunday. She cited the new border security amendment that would double the size of the Border Patrol and complete 700 miles of fencing along the southern border.

The measure would pour shitloads of federal money into Arizona.

But she shouldn't count her chickens just yet. The bill faces opposition in the House. And even if it passes there, the "border surge" amendment could be stripped out or diluted somewhere along the line. Such a thing has happened before:

A Reagan Legacy: Amnesty For Illegal Immigrants

July 04, 2010

As the nation's attention turns back to the fractured debate over immigration, it might be helpful to remember that in 1986, Ronald Reagan signed a sweeping immigration reform bill into law. It was sold as a crackdown: There would be tighter security at the Mexican border, and employers would face strict penalties for hiring undocumented workers.

<snip>

The law granted amnesty to nearly 3 million illegal immigrants, yet was largely considered unsuccessful because the strict sanctions on employers were stripped out of the bill for passage.

She has vetoed many of the crazier bills, expanded Medicare, pushed hard for a tax increase for education, but still does many, many horrid things.

This state - my state - is a laughingstock and a joke. Jesus I wish I lived somewhere where most of its residents didn't waddle around on all fours. (It's called "bipedalism&quot

6. The border security amendment is the ransom we have to pay Republicans.

Totally unneccesary, a huge, multi-billion dollar boondoggle.

Seizures of border crossers are at al ALL TIME LOW, and we have to double the number of Border Patrol, which has already doubled in the past 10 years?

Ask people on the border how they like having the Border Patrol hovering overhead, standing on the corner, setting up checkpoints. You wanna see a police state? Go to the border.

Passing this amendment was pure pandering to Republican fears (and security contract opportunities). It almost make me hope the House behaves as usual, and kills it.

8. That's right. It's a very important bill and long overdue.

One of the few decent things Bush Jr. tried to do was push that through. Sort of.

But that border security amendment is just a huge fucking rip-off. Billions for more cops we don't need. I can't think of worse way to spend money we don't have. I mean, it's bad enough that's it's billions of dollars, but it's even worse that it goes to ratchet up that paramilitarized police state that is the border, and anything within 75 miles or so.

We'll have to see if that's good enough for those insane GOP assholes in the House. I almost feel sorry for Boehner. Almost.

11. Then how else could we stop the flow of illegal immigrants?

Please correct me if I'm wrong in assuming that you agree the flow should be stopped or hindered.

I agree with 77% of Americans who say that increased border security needs to accompany any legislation allowing undocumented immigrants to apply for legal status.
