Apple dumps Samsung, inks three-year TSMC chip deal for iPhone 6 and beyond

Source: BGR News

Apple has reportedly reached deal with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the world’s largest chip manufacturer, as it continues its efforts to end its business relationship with rival Samsung. According to unnamed sources speaking with Digitimes, Apple has inked a three-year deal with TSMC that will see utilize the company’s foundry services for the upcoming A8, A9 and A9X chipsets.

Production of the A8 is supposedly scheduled to begin in small volumes next month for testing, and it will utilize a 20-nanometer process.

The A9 and A9X will use 16-nanometer and 10-nanometer processes, respectively, according to the report. Digitimes reported earlier that TSMC will also be building Apple’s A7 processor, which is expected to power the upcoming iPhone 5S. The A8 is then expected to be included in the iPhone 6 and other mobile devices, and the A9 and A9X will be found in Apple’s 2015 and 2016 lineups, respectively.

That's another few billion dollars lost by Samsung due to their thieving ways. Google warned them.

their competitor.

As far as your view about "Samsung thieving ways". Apple is no innocent bystander in this long standing soap opera

Please don't assume I am a android fan boy. I have owned all series of the Iphone, including the iPhone 5s, in addition to other Apple computers. I also have had several models of HTC and Samsung phones, and none were particularly impressive to me until the S3. I currently own an iPhone5 and an S4, and objectively speaking the S4 is the most technologically advanced phone I have owned to date.

Apple has made some mis-steps along the way. Yes, they will always have their base, but they have catch-up to do, and just releasing an IOS7 in September is not going to be enough if they want to stay number 1 in innovation. The rumored 5s has to far exceed expectations, and that is going to be a tough task with the stage of development they are in.

Oh, and incidentally, I program software for window's platforms. That is one thing that Microsoft has excelled at is their IDE. Apple's development platform is definitely moving in the right direction, but for developers, Microsoft still has the lead in my view.

That is not to say Microsoft has not messed up, they did so big time with windows 8, and Vista previously. Creating an interface that does NOT buy the user, especially the business user anything, in fact makes it more cumbersome, is a losing proposition, which is why most business have not jumped on board, and why Microsoft is adjusting the GUI to a desktop version in their next service pack release for Windows 8

Google and Samsung are the amateurs. Google hasn't made a single dime off of Android, because they are being relatively smart about it. Samsung cheated like Hell, prompting many warnings from Google. Because they are good friends with Samsung? Nope. Google is trying to cover their own asses.

The next few years will be enlightening.

Again, I like Microsoft. I have friends who work for them. I just wish they would fire Bill Gates' college roommate and introduce some new blood.

GUI instead of trying to jam metro down people's throat, especially windows

By them doing that they are admitting they screwed up

You are correct they should have fired Ballmer years ago.

Google is no amateur. gee, microsoft hotmail or gmail, lets see who has more users, same with bing verses google search engine, and for you to call Google an amateur shows your bias. Same with Samsung. if you have used their latest phones you would not say so. It could have been argued with their nexus phone and before, but since their s3, it is night and day. Just look at worldwide sales

As far as apple, they have bcome as dogmatic as Microsoft, we know what is good for you, so they make non-user replaceable batteries, a lightning interface cable to nickel and dime users to buy an adapter to dock their equipment, and other such things

None of them are angels, including what Microsoft did to Netscape, and apple did to xerox

I have no idea what you're talking about.

It is by far the best (cleanest, fastest, most reliable) Windows release in computing history.

I can get through my entire day without switching to Metro once. Why? Because the desktop is still where you work, and it's better than Windows 7.

That said, I don't mind Metro, the live-tiles are pretty cool. I don't think they should change a thing.

BTW, on the desktop just right-click on the bottom-left start icon. All your admin stuff is right there, just like Windows 7 and XP.

windows 8?

It is a nightmare for companies, and users, but go on believing what you want, keeping in mind that MSFT themselves have recognized they screwed up and are changing the interface in windows 8.1 primarily because business are not moving up to windows 8

The market and users have voiced their complaints

Our office is on Win 7, no upgrades yet because it's in the budget for next year, not this year.

Microsoft themselves recognizes this. Yes, with 8.1, users can still launch metro, but most won't.

Windows 8, tries to be both a mobile and desktop interface, and requires much more keystrokes then windows 7

Windows 8 adoption levels in the enterprise environment were awful

After 6 months of the launch of windows 8, .53% of enterprise computers had a windows os running windows 8

It should have been at least 10% if you follow previous releases of windows os

Do it for them, unless the hardware has a wow factor

No they are not going to dissolve into nothing, but if they want to remain number 1 in the mobile business, and not second place they need to impress. That's all I am saying. The iPhone 5 was evolutionary, not revolutionary, and that is what they need to strive for like they did with the original iPhone, the iPod, iPad, and other computing devices

and i think they are the only product that is compared to a ghost e.g. android which isn't a product at all, it's an OS.

It would be like saying, Ford isn't that successful because it only has 49% of the market compared with the combined market share of Dodge, GMC, Chevorlet, Buick, Jeep, Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Mercedes, BMW, you get the idea.

There actions speak volumes. In other words they are switching to Taiwan semiconductor away from Samsung, because they realize the competitive threat

Their map program should have never been released the way it was initially, that is just one example that they have become complacent. They did take immediate steps to rectify the problem, and let go of the person in charge of it

A better example of complacency, much worse than Apple is Microsoft. Paul Allen should be gone. They should have never missed getting into the mobile market as late as they did. What were they thinking?

As you said, android isn't a product, but what Samsung has done with it with touch wiz and other refinements is a clear warning to Apple not to let their guard down

That is all I am saying

I also do not understand why they never tried for the business market with their computers. They are doing it with their IPADs, but they had some major opportunities to try and do it when Vista screwed up, and even this last year with windows8, though it is harder with. Windows 8 because economic hard times, and companies are staying on windows 7 for the time being. Vista was the prime opportunity

Hell, that's almost a doubling of Moore's law.

I think the days of Apple pulling the old Microsoft trick of announcing future releases to scare off the competition is over.

I'm not predicting the demise of Apple in any way. I am predicting the era of their dominance in certain areas to diminish.

Apps crash, especially Facebook. The battery is fully charged one minute, half dead the next. The day later I get a full day off it. Reception is totally erractic - I've seen 2 bars of Wi-Fi three feet from the router. The next day it picks up one way down the street.

Yeah, a 3GS will be very taxed by the newer apps.

The carriers have dropped the prices of the 5, if you can't wait.
