Thousands Protest Fracking in Albany...

Source: The Energy Collective

The same day Illinois Governor Pat Quinn signed the strictest standards on oil and gas drilling in the country, thousands of citizens and celebrities embarked upon New York’s Capitol building in Albany to protest the possibility of lifting the state-wide moratorium on hydraulic fracturing, or fracking.

... Over 2,000 protesters rallied in front of the Capitol building, waving their signs and cheering on celebrities like Natalie Merchant, who performed for the demonstrators during the proceedings. Event organizer Julia Walsh offered this simple directive for the crowd, “There is no compromising our water, our air, our health and our future.”

Of the people in attendance, around 100 local citizens comprised of several western New York organizations took part; including members of Occupy Buffalo, PUSH Buffalo, and the Western New York Peace Center. Buffalo’s Rita Yelda, organizer with New Yorkers Against Fracking was pleased with the local turnout, “It really speaks volumes that so many people are interested in this topic.”

Disagreements on fracking often exist along party lines. On one hand, Republicans heavily support the practice to generate revenue, jobs, and taking advantage of the abundant supply of natural gas in some parts of the country – including the Southern Tier of New York State. Democrats, meanwhile, voice numerous concerns about the safety and environmental impact of hydraulic fracturing, notably in regards to fracking fluid and the potential of contaminating drinking water for citizens...

My apologies for using an unrelated thread to make a point, and bringing a GD fight into an unrelated forum. The sarcasm was directed at the BOG, who view any disagreement with an Obama policy as evidence of racism... I should have kept the fight in GD.

New York is not a major oil/gas producing state. It isn't where a lot of fracking is taking place. So the oil industry doesn't really give a crap about NY.

North Dakota and Wyoming are hugely different stories. ND has huge amounts of fracking happening. Lots of oil revenue going into the local economy and into state coffers. Lots of jobs being created in the oil boom. Lots of politicians that don't want that money/jobs spigot cut off. WY has huge deposits of shale oil that hasn't been strongly developed yet. They will want to keep open the possibility of future development of all that oil.

Most people drive cars that burn gasoline and will want to keep being able to buy gasoline and somewhat lower than astronomical prices. They aren't happy about the price incease in gasoline in the last five years.

PREDICTION: Fracking will continue in those places where it is already being used on a large scale or may be needed in the future.

See all those lights inside the square? Those are burn-off flares where excess natural gas is being burned. Fracking is used on oil too. Flaring off that much natural gas is a horrible waste. ND is where the action is.

I grew up into the Texas oil fields. Dad worked in the oil field. Later, for a couple of years, in the early 1980s, I worked on offshore semi-submersible oil rigs. I was a ballast control room operator. Fracking has been around since I was a kid, back in the 1950s. It isn't new. What is new is precision horizontal drilling that enables a greatly increased use of fracking.
