Chrysler expected to formally refuse Jeep recall

DETROIT (AP) - In one of the biggest-ever showdowns between an automaker and the government, Chrysler on Tuesday is expected to file papers explaining its refusal to recall 2.7 million older Jeep SUVs that are at risk of catching fire in rear-end collisions.
The government says 51 people have suffered fiery deaths in Jeep Grand Cherokees and Libertys that were hit from behind. Regulators claim that the position of the gas tank, behind the rear axle, makes the Jeeps more susceptible to a fiery crash than similar models.
Chrysler is expected to stick to its contention that the SUVs are as safe as other vehicles on the road from that era. The Jeeps, it says, met all federal safety standards when they were built, some more than two decades ago. Regulators are unfairly holding the vehicles to a new standard for fuel tank strength, Chrysler claims.
Chrsyler has successfully used that argument in the past to resist a recall. But that stance carries some substantial financial and public-relations risks.

(60,339 posts)If there is a critical design flaw, it should be dealt with. These vehicles have been on the road for 10 years, if there was going to be a recall, shouldn't it have happened before now?
At this rate, I could go back on my the company that made my barbecue grill that is rusted out should it blow up and it is only 5 years old.

(5,901 posts)I had a 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee, and in year 3 I have to replace three of the four auto-window motors. This was a wide-spread problem, a design flaw, and no recall. In year 4 I found out that there was a systemic brake failure and I was quoted $1600 to fix it. The mechanic told me that Jeep had been under pressure to recall for this failure, to no avail. I'll never buy another Jeep, and I was a very good customer!
