NEWTOWN, Conn. (AP) — Newtown has marked the passage of six months since the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School with a moment of silence.

The sisters of slain teacher Victoria Soto asked for a 26-second moment of silence at the ceremony Friday to honor the 20 children and six adults killed at the school on Dec. 14.

A lone gunman carried out the massacre after killing his mother inside their Newtown home, and he committed suicide as police arrived.

The remembrance event in Newtown is doubling as a call to action on gun control. Elected officials and families of the victims have gathered for the reading of thousands of names of gun violence victims at an event that is expected to take 12 hours.

Calls for action mark 6 months since Newtown

Mayors Against Illegal Guns will launch a bus tour that will travel to 25 states over 100 days to build support for background checks legislation. Legislation to expand background checks for gun buyers failed in the Senate in April.

The mayors group is also holding events in 10 states calling for lawmakers to expand background checks and urging senators who opposed the bill to reconsider. Those events, which include gun violence survivors and gun owners, will be held in Arkansas, Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Montana, North Carolina, New Hampshire, Ohio and Pennsylvania.

The gunman in Newtown killed his mother and then 20 children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School on Dec. 14 before committing suicide as police arrived.

Some of the victims' families are in Washington this week lobbying lawmakers for action

to enact better legislation. Otoh, it feels like it was yesterday. All those poor kids, and even the ones who were lucky enough to make it out alive.

Six months and nothing has been done on a Federal level to address gun violence in this country. How many others have been slaughtered during this time?

Shame, shame, shame that we have so many cowards in this country who will not do the right thing. Doing nothing is criminal, and the blood of the victims is on the hands of everyone who won't budge on controlling guns.
