Whitney Houston, superstar of records, films, dies

Whitney Houston, who reigned as pop music's queen until her majestic voice and regal image were ravaged by drug use, has died. She was 48.

Publicist Kristen Foster said Saturday that the singer had died, but the cause and the location of her death were unclear.

At her peak in the 1980s and '90s, Houston the golden girl of the music industry and one of the world's best-selling artists.

Among her hits were "How Will I Know," ''Saving All My Love for You" and "I Will Always Love You." She won multiple Grammys including album and record of the year.

It was her singing and she wasn't lip syncing using someone elses voice.

Did you know this:

"The Star Spangled Banner" is a charity single recorded by American singer Whitney Houston to raise funds for soldiers and families of those involved in the Persian Gulf War. Written by Francis Scott Key, "The Star-Spangled Banner" is the national anthem of the United States. The musical arrangement for Whitney Houston's rendition was by conductor John Clayton. The recording was produced by music coordinator Rickey Minor, along with Houston herself.

Traditionally performed at sports games in the U.S., "The Star Spangled Banner" was performed by Houston at Super Bowl XXV in 1991. Houston donated her portion of the proceeds.

After the September 11, 2001 attacks, Arista Records re-released Houston's "The Star Spangled Banner". She once again donated her share of the royalties, as did Arista Records, towards the firefighters and victims of the terrorist attacks. This time the single peaked at #6 on the US Hot 100, and was certified platinum by the RIAA. It also surprisingly peaked at #5 on the Canadian Singles Chart. This made Houston the first musical act to take the national anthem Top 10 in the US, and have it certified platinum. In 2001, the song reached number six on the Billboard Hot 100, which was Houston's last Top 10 entry on the chart.

In December 1990, when Whitney Houston was announced as the performer of "The Star-Spangled Banner" at Super Bowl XXV, Houston knew instantly how she wanted to interpret the tune there—with jazz chords and soulful gospel rhythms. So, Rickey Minor, her longtime musical director, suggested taking the song out of standard, waltz tempo—three quarters time—and add an extra beat per measure, which would allow Houston to open up her lungs and 'breathe'. Two week before the Super Bowl, Houston heard the arrangement, played by The Florida Orchestra and recorded at Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center earlier in January, for the first time. And about ten days later, she recorded a breathtaking game-day master at a California studio. Minor recalled that she truly embraced the song. But not everybody agreed. Some National Football League (NFL) officials feared the rendition was too flamboyant for wartime. Minor told USA Today that "They thought the harmonies were too different, that it was sacrilegious." Bob Best, the Super Bowl's pregame show producer since the early 1980s, added that "Their hang-up was that it wasn't easy to sing to. I disagreed wholeheartedly." Four days before the game, NFL officials ordered Best to phone Houston's father, John, and ask if she would record another version. The answer was no. Best said that "I held that phone so far away from my ear." Yet, when Houston stepped onto the field, Minor was filled with anxiety: "I thought, 'What if everybody boos?'" Two weeks later, the single was a big hit on the Billboard charts.[1][2]

Anthem is that she seemed to enjoy it the way you should when you're singing it. I know she took the drugs but I believe he more than encouraged it. I know I'll get flamed for that, but it's just what I feel.

At some point people in the audience recognized that Whitney was singing in the choir, one of countless others, and called for her to solo. She so sweetly refused, and called attention to the great singers present, including her mother and her aunt, and said she'd stay all night in the choir to sing behind such people 'I'll stay in my robes tonight'. Which she did. She seemed so happy and she was so beautiful. She's in the choir again, I suppose.....

And he was talking about how Bobby got all the blame but that she was an inner city girl from Newark and Bobby seems to be doing very well in his sobriety whereas Whitney didn't seem to be doing so well. Speculating that Bobby is unfairly blamed for her drug addiction.

She was as perfectly capable of walking away from her bad behavior as any of us are.

I suppose her fans - and they number in the hundreds of millions of course - don't want to admit that our idols are flawed, but I'm not going to blame Bobby Brown for what happened to Whitney.

Anyway, this is a very, very sad turn in a life that accomplished so much.

people gave her a hard time during these past few years..non singers claiming she had destroyed her voice with drugs and cigarettes..she still had it in her, i believe..singing comes from the center of the soul and when she felt safe enough, i believed she was going to bust out...and show the critics and naysayers...she could have..still...

more difficult for her family if she were pregnant. Of course the speculation is now all over the internet since those pictures hit the web.

It just dawned on me that she was 48 years old so pregnancy is unlikely. Not impossible, but unlikely.

Fluid buildup in the abdomen due to liver failure. I've seen guys with that who looked like they were full-term pregnant.

Of course, that's just wild speculation. But I think it's still safe to assume that chemical dependency played a role in this tragedy. RIP, Ms. Houston. What a shame.

She had a magnificent instrument and was one of the best singers of her generation. All the women in her family are so gifted, my heart goes out to them.

I was thinking that in one respect Whitney and Amy Winehouse were similar. They both married losers who introduced them to drugs, alcohol and physical abuse. I hope that both men rot!!!

Rest in peace, Whitney.

Sun Feb 12, 2012, 01:59 AM
Feb 2012

It's doubtful that we have seen a singer with a more amazing voice than Whitney Houston.

The sad thing is that she played out the role of the quintessential benefactor/victim of the American dream. She came from (relatively) nowhere to find herself on top of the world. And then flushed it all down the toilet.

We've seen it time and again. We're free to dream big, and, for some who dream big, the dream comes true...and turns into a nightmare. It's kind of an incentive for us peasants to keep ourselves in our place. The Elvis Syndrome.

However, I have to say that the beauty of her voice brought many moments of amazement and beauty.

for people who end up in that situation, and have no resource and no access to treatment options at all, due to poverty.

Here you have a very successful individual, yes, with some issues, but with every opportunity to overcome this problem, and sadly, she chose to burn herself down instead.

Too many shitty situations in this world for me to spend all my empathy on a person who had so much opportunity, just because I happened to like some of her songs.

Successful treatment of addiction comes from the addict as much as the help received. Without it, there can be no success. Most often, there is failure.

Wealth or fame is no gaurantor of successfully overcoming addiction. It is an equal opportunity disease.

Sun Feb 12, 2012, 10:24 PM

A great many use these substances their entire lives and never become addicts. It's not because these people's sheer force of will is greater than the addicted; they just don't have whatever "it" is that makes them become totally--physically, mentally, and emotionally--dependent. This is why chemical dependency is treated as an actual disease and not just as an unfortunate lifestyle choice.

Feb 2012

I grew up with Whitney's music and loved what I heard of it. I remember my cousin singing "The Greatest Love Of All" at the Diamond Wedding Anniversary for my grandparents in 1990. And of course I remember her in the Bodyguard. I had rediscovered her in recent years -or more accurately -rediscovered my old favorite songs of her that she recorded in the 1980s.

It's so sad. Recently I've been watching videos of her in the 1980s and early 1990s on YouTube. She was so beautiful with the voice of an angel and she sounded like a really nice, sweet, genuine person with so much potential and a great future ahead of her. And then she got involved with that loser Bobby Brown and succumbed to his pathetic low-life lifestyle with his drug abuse and domestic violence record and she got sucked in. Her life from then on seemed to be one of consistent tragedy. In a sense, it feels all the more painful because she failed to take the advice she had given her listeners in "The Greatest Love of All" about learning to love yourself. She didn't take care of herself, made some awful choices in life and paid a very bitter price.

I was elated when she broke up with Bobby Brown -I thought it was long overdue and the best thing she could have done for herself. Even though the damage had been done, I was hoping that she would be able to pull herself up and live a happy and fulfilling and successful life. I was really hoping there would be a happy ending. It's so unbelievably sad to think of how much she lost in life

Rest in peace Whitney. You are loved and missed and I pray now that you have the peace and happiness, wherever you are, that you lost in life. Thanks for your music -it spoke to my soul and it's beauty and quality will be her legacy.
