(101,319 posts)(I presume you mean the fall of Ceausescu). He was a really ruthless dictator who held power over the populace who had a well justified fear of his secret police. This might be more like, say, France in 1968 - a government that was legitimately elected, and has the support of a large conservative section of the population, but has many opponents who are willing to take to the streets.

(12,977 posts)For one thing, the Turkish government is universally acknowledged to be massively corrupt. For another, it has put through measures that are extremely unpopular with more Westernized Turks, such as banning abortion. And for a third, it has used its decade in power to purge the military and government of secular tendencies -- including arresting top-level generals on trumped-up charges.
So Turkey may not be Romania -- but it's a lot closer to that than to France/1968.

(135,060 posts)Thousands of demonstrators are gathering in central Istanbul for a third day of protests against Turkey's Islamist-rooted government.
After a few hours of calm earlier in the day, Taksim Square, the focal point of the protests, was filling up again with protesters waving flags, chanting anti-government slogans and calling on the prime minister, Tayyip Erdogan, to step down.
The largest anti-government demonstrations in years have turned violent, with protesters and police clashing for the past two days.
Dozens were injured and almost 1,000 people have been arrested in 90 demonstrations held across the vast nation.

(5,823 posts)They gathered and marched. Police chased them with pepper spray and tear gas and drove their tanks over people who offered the police food in return. Two young people were run over by the tanks and were killed. Another young woman, a friend of mine, was hit in the head by one of the incoming tear gas canisters. The police were shooting them straight into the crowd. After a three hour operation she is still in Intensive Care Unit and in very critical condition. As I write this we dont know if she is going to make it. This blog is dedicated to her.
