'All in the Family' star Jean Stapleton dies at 90
Source: Chicago Tribune
Jean Stapleton, who played Archie Bunkers long-suffering wife Edith in the long-running 1970s television series All in the Family, died Friday at her New York City home. She was 90.
Stapleton died of natural causes, her family announced Saturday.
She had been a veteran of stage, film and television when she was cast in the CBS sitcom opposite Carroll OConnors loud-mouthed, bigoted Archie Bunker, who often addressed her as "dingbat." She won three Emmys for the role.
... Born in New York City on Jan. 19, 1923, Stapleton was the daughter of a billboard advertising salesman and an opera singer.

As a 90s/00s kid, back in 2009 and 2010 I used to watch The Jeffersons and Good Times when a local TV station put on classic sitcoms in the late afternoons and later began watching All in the Family on DVD.

(Edited to add) I notice that a lot of cast members of '70s Norman Lear sitcoms have passed recently.
March 1: Bonnie Franklin (Ann Romano in One Day at a Time)
Jan. 14: Conrad Bain (Dr. Arthur Harmon in Maude)
Jan. 2: Ralph Wertimer (who played the doorman Ralph Hart in The Jeffersons)
July 24, 2012: Sherman Helmsley (George Jefferson, The Jeffersons)

(52,162 posts)The 70's are now 40 years old in some cases and over 30 in all cases. The first episode of All In The Family aired over 41 years ago, the first Jeffersons and One Day At a Time over 37 years ago, the first Maude over 40 years ago. It is hardly surprising that we are starting see the adults on those shows passing on.

(46,114 posts)the writers had her die in her sleep of a stroke and the first episode of the new season (1982? ) had Archie and Stefanie trying to pick up the pieces of their shattered lives. It really was well written and heartbreaking. Especially when Archie found a lost bedroom slipper of Edith and started to talk to her and he broke down crying for the first time during the show. Powerful.
Here's the transcript of the episode:

Hell, maybe it would do the nation good to have a mandatory watching of the entirety of AITF (and Archie Bunker's Place, where the Edith death ep occurred) some time..

(84 posts)Jean Stapleton was very active in Christian Science and was not comfortable with so much of the show's action being shifted to a bar (the bar in "Archie Bunker's Place" . So she chose to leave the show.
I'm always surprised when Christian Scientists live to 90. Chances are they have not been treated for any diseases that become more common in old age. My own mother died at 68, and suffered (and I use that word literally) with ovarian cancer for many months before she died. It was only when it was far too late to do anything about it that she saw a doctor.
I loved the humanity and dignity that Jean Stapleton brought to the role of Edith Bunker. I never missed an episode when they were new, and I have seen every episode in re-runs many times. Interestingly, it was my Dad's favorite show. He was as Republican as they come, and I could never figure out why he loved the show so much, as it clearly came from a perspective much more to the left.

(14,061 posts)Her Edith, although a "Dingbat," shed a lot of light on just how ignorant and stupid bigotry and prejudice can be, and just how liberating it is to just accept people as they are.
One episode that still brings me to tears (the other being the Christmas episode where Mike invites a draft dodger and Archie invites a man who lost a son in Vietnam) is her episode where Edith has a crisis of faith after her friend Beverly, a cross-dresser, is beaten to death because of who he is. Pretty powerful and groundbreaking stuff for the early to mid-1970s, and pretty thought-provoking, as well.
RIP, Ms. Stapleton -- you will be missed. Those were indeed the days.

Boy, the way Glen Miller played. Songs that made the hit parade.
Guys like us, we had it made. Those were the days.
Didn't need no welfare state. Everybody pulled his weight.
Gee, our old LaSalle ran great. Those were the days.
And you know who you were then, girls were girls and men were men.
Mister, we could use a man like Herbert Hoover again.
People seemed to be content. Fifty dollars paid the rent.
Freaks were in a circus tent. Those were the days.
Take a little Sunday spin, go to watch the Dodgers win.
Have yourself a dandy day that cost you under a fin.
Hair was short and skirts were long. Kate Smith really sold a song.
I don't know just what went wrong. Those Were The Days.

(22,000 posts)Looking back at the cast it is pretty amazing what the four main members did throughout their careers. I have never seen Jean Stapleton in any other role, but I understand she was quite an accomplished actress. She lived a long life. RIP
It was definitely "must watch TV" at the time. She left us with so many fond memories; I felt more than a little sad when I heard the news. Ha, when my husband had super long hair back in the day, it drove my dad nuts and he started calling him "meathead." Thanks for the laughter and the tears, dingbat.
