Pro-Ellen ralliers surpass One Million Moms on Facebook
Safe to say Ellen DeGeneres has won this round. After conservative Christian group One Million Moms railed against J.C. Penney for hiring the lesbian talk-show host as a spokesperson, DeGeneres addressed them on her show, quipping, Not that theres anyone counting, but for a group that calls themselves the Million Moms, they only have 40,000 members on their page.J.C. Penney stood by DeGeneres, and even conservative TV host Bill OReilly voiced his support for the comedian. Now Facebook fans have validated the retailer for sticking to their guns.
Since yesterday, a group called 1 Million People Who Support Ellen for J.C. Penney has popped up, far surpassing the support of One Million Moms Facebook Likes (now 42,634). As of press time, 1 Million People has 80,244 members and gaining. According to founder Cathie Winter Miller, the group only had 38 Likes yesterday, and a recent check of the groups page showed pages upon pages of Team Ellen comments in the last 20 minutes alone.

And the "Occupy One Million Moms" movement continues. Protestors of the organization's policies continue to post on its Facebook page at a faster rate than OMM can delete the comments.
I am now wondering if J.C. Penney anticipated this when they hired Ellen. If so, they have unleashed a brilliant viral marketing campaign and a sure-fire way to revive a brand many had perceived as "dowdy."

(3,269 posts)I scrolled down their FB page a little bit and most of the posts get below 350 "Likes." That tells me they have a smallish base.
The hilarious photo of George Bush hugging a soldier was liked by more than 11,000 people. Probably most of them also like irony.
In the meantime, here's an interesting professional take on this situation:
>>Could it be, too, that our reactions to what we see online may be normalizing a bit? Just because a few people take a stance on something (particularly a wrong-headed one) doesnt mean companies have to jump. Its a question asked often at PR conferences: When do you respond to something online? Perhaps companies are getting better at taking a look at the complaint (in)box and reacting in a way thats both right and strategic.<<

(532 posts)I actually agree with the notion that JCP anticipated it. Even if they did fire her, it will not hurt her, or even put a blotch on her. She's got plenty of money anyway. Just my opinion.
MADem
(135,425 posts)Five years from now, ten years from now, she might not be the hot property she is today. She's working and earning now, because she CAN. She also has a platform that JCP can use--her show. You know they'll be giving away crap to the cheering audiences--cheaper than a paid commercial and everyone can pat themselves on the back; win-win-win-win for her, for the corporation, for her syndicator, for the channels that air her shows.
She has a good agent, obviously, who seeks out opportunities that bring in the big bucks without too much labor and enhance her name brand--I mean, already she makes pet food and underwear and who knows what else.
She's not so much in the "need" category as the "want" one--or maybe the "ensure maintenance of the lifestyle to which she has become accustomed" category. If she ever decides she wants to give her money away and go live a life of spiritual poverty or something, I'd be more than happy to assume the burden of all that cash for her!
