Oakland police chief steps down

Oakland Police Chief Howard Jordan abruptly announced this morning that he's stepping down.

The chief told rank and file in a letter that he is on a medical leave, effective immediately, and taking steps toward a medical retirement.

Jordan's announcement came just minutes before a city consultant, former Los Angeles Police Chief William Bratton, was scheduled to present to the news media a plan on how Oakland could reduce crime. The city, however, hastily postponed the news conference to a later date.
