Mark Sanford Settles With Ex-Wife In Trespassing Case

Source: TPM

Congressman-elect Mark Sanford will not have to appear in court for trespassing charges alleged by his ex-wife, Jenny Sanford, mere days after the former South Carolina governor defeated Democrat Elizabeth Colbert Busch for the state's 1st Congressional District on Tuesday.

Attorneys for both parties reached a settlement on Wednesday, according to the Charleston ABC station. The settlement includes a $5,000 payment owed to Jenny Sanford as well as an admission of wrongdoing by Mark Sanford for trespassing at his ex-wife's home several times without permission. Sanford claimed he entered her residence to watch the Super Bowl with their younger son. A court appearance was originally scheduled for Thursday, May 9.

To document the charges and financial payback Sanford was forced to make. No such luck. That data has been scrubbed from the site.

There is passing reference to ethics charges but it does not list what they were are even how many there were.

It says he paid back to the State the costs of the Argentina leg of his trip without saying how much that was. (Was that an earlier trip -- I think so).

There is no mention of a fine or the amount stemming from improper use of State funds.

So it all gets swept under the rug.

If only I had the talent to do such a thing. Picture a big pile of steaming shit on the right and Colbert-Busch on the left. And a caption with "the candidate on the right has an (R) behind its name. Guess which one S.C. District 1 voted for?"

Or something like that.

Should look into where the $5000.00 came from. In the past he has used taxpayer money for personal use. Just saying.

CHARLESTON, South Carolina (Reuters) - ... In the settlement on Wednesday, Mark Sanford admitted to trespassing more than once, in violation of the couple's 2010 divorce agreement that says neither can enter the other's home without specific permission.

Sanford's attorney, Ralph E. Tupper, could not be reached for comment.

"No one will have any comment beyond the order that we filed," said Jenny Sanford's lawyer, Deena Smith McRackan ...

... In April, as Sanford was waging a political comeback campaign for Congress in South Carolina, he was accused by his ex-wife of trespassing at her Sullivan's Island home. Under the terms of their 2010 divorce, neither party can enter the other's home without permission.

Sanford later said in a statement he was simply watching the Super Bowl with one of his sons, and could not get in touch with Jenny Sanford beforehand ...

Sanford has "entered into a pattern of entering onto Plaintiff's property, both at her former and current residences, without her permission and against her wishes," according to a complaint filed in Charleston County family court on March 21. It asked that Sanford be held in contempt of court.

Jenny Sanford has informed Sanford "on a number of occasions that this behavior is in violation of the court's order, and has demanded that it not occur again," the complaint read. The document does not include details about previous trespassing accusations ...
