WH Goes After Romney: ‘An Odd Messenger’ On Birth Control Rule (Rule SAME As Romney's MA Policy)

The White House went after Mitt Romney on Wednesday, saying the former Massachusetts governor is an “odd messenger” to criticize the president on a rule that would require insurance plans to cover contraceptives. The Obama Administration’s policy, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said, is “virtually identical” to a policy in Massachusetts when Romney was governor.

“… the services that this rule would provide for women around the country are the same that are provided in Massachusetts and were provided when (Romney) was governor,” Carney said. “Including contraception.”

As the economy continues to show signs of life, Romney has used the growing firestorm over the contraception rule as an opportunity to attack the president. In his Nevada victory speech, Romney vowed to “defend religious liberty” by overturning any mandate that “tramples on our first freedom, our right to believe as we choose.”

Of course, this begs the question: why is the Democratic health plan advanced by President Obama not already significantly and firmly better than the MA/Romneycare plan? If a R-governor can successfully sign a health care plan that covers contraception, shouldn't we be able to at least do the same?

Mark my words, any further compromise over women's health by the Obama WH will be a disaster for Democrats. Employers do not have the right to choose whether their employees use contraception or not. A conscience belongs to an individual, not a corporation. A Catholic hospital that receives Federal funds and employs people of all ranges and types of faith has an obligation to respect the individual consciences of their employees.

I'm calling on our President to stand firm in insisting that employers provide comprehensive health insurance for all their employees: women especially. Contraception is a normal part of women's health care; it deserves to be covered normally.

As a woman, I take offense that we are talked about as if we are not capable of making our own decisions!!!!!!

but you're not free to act upon tenets that you chose to believe. I can believe in human sacrifice to ease global warming, but I don't think anyone would want me to act on it.

and I will defend your right to do so. Please allow me to do the same, and don't make or support laws that put your beliefs before mine. Thanks. See how easy that is? Religious liberty for all...

If this bill makes you unable to believe as you choose, then you weren't much of a believer to begin with.
