Fresh off victory, NRA holds convention in Houston

Source: AP

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Fresh off a huge victory over President Barack Obama on gun control, the message from the National Rifle Association is clear: The fight has just begun.

The powerful gun rights lobby gathers in Houston this weekend for its annual convention and organizers anticipate a rollicking, Texas-sized party — both to celebrate the victory in Washington and recharge for more political struggles as gun control advocates tally their own successes in states around the country.

"If you are an NRA member, you deserve to be proud," Wayne LaPierre, the NRA's brash, no-compromises chief executive wrote last week to the organization's 5 million members, telling them they "exemplify everything that's good and right about America."

The NRA couldn't have picked a friendlier place to stage its annual event. More than 70,000 people are expected to attend the three-day "Stand and Fight"-themed convention, which includes a gun trade show, political rally and strategy meeting.

And as planned to show proper worship for the hate group...

RNC Video Mocks Obama For Comforting Newtown Mom

Republicans are blocking gun reform but now they are criticizing President Obama for not passing it? The DNC is fuming over a new RNC ad that shows Obama consoling the mother of a victim of the Newtown school shooting -- but criticizes Obama for not passing gun reform in the wake of the shooting. The RNC insisted they used a clip from an ABC News package, with RNC spokesman Sean Spicer tweeting “I don’t think we control ABC.” It’s just another instance of the high-stakes fight over gun reform, coming just two days after New Hampshire Republican Sen. Kelly Ayotte was confronted at a town hall meeting by the daughter of the Sandy Hook Elementary School principal, who was killed in the shooting.

The ad, called "The First 100 Days," criticizes Obama on the failure of his legislative agenda, including gun control, so far in Congress. It features a voiceover saying that Obama’s agenda has “already suffered a string of defeats,” and a black and white photo of the president reaching to embrace Nicole Hockley, the distraught mother of a victim in the shooting massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

Democratic National Committee spokesman Brad Woodhouse called the ad “disgraceful” in a tweet and “disgusting” in another.

"The bottom feeders behind this one should be embarrassed ," said Jeremy Funk, a spokesman for the Democratic organization Americans United for Change.

Man opens fire with AR-15 rifle at Houston airport checkpoint before turning gun on himself

Beaumont man shot dead at Houston's Bush Airport

A Beaumont man shot and killed Thursday at Houston's Bush Intercontinental Airport was a reserved person of few words, neighbors said.

But 29-year-old Carnell Marcus Moore wrote of death on his Facebook page earlier Thursday and, according to Houston police, apparently left a suicide note that said he was having trouble controlling his "monster inside."

Moore was killed in gunfire about 1:35 p.m. near a Terminal B ticket counter. It is unclear who fired the fatal shot.

HPD spokesman Kese Smith said an armed male in his early 30s entered the airport and fired at least once into the ceiling just inside the doors of the terminal's pre-security departure area.

Hearing the gunfire, a Homeland Security Investigations agent came out of his office and confronted Moore, ordering him to put down the gun, Smith said.

When Moore refused the command, the officer pulled out his weapon and the man turned toward him, Smith said.

The agent fired once, and Moore shot himself - apparently at the same time, according to Smith. Moore died at the scene. No one else was injured.

this guy apparently had some mental issues.

Homicide investigators with the Houston Police Department recovered a note that appears to be a suicide note. In it, Moore said that he was having trouble controlling his "monster inside."

there doesn't appear to be anything in his past that would prevent him from passing a background check.

The NRA and gun manufacturers love this stuff. Any time anyone in government mentions guns the NRA membership goes up and there is a run on guns in stores, shows, and the internets. It is a giant advertisement for free (except for the millions spent on time Congress debates it) and they love it. With the NRA and Repugnances playing off each other it is a no win for the sane people of the US. The crazies are running the asylum.

I own a firearm and purchased it when background checks were done. It took maybe an hour for that to be done to close the purchase. A whole hour! My gawd what I could have done with that gun in an hour boggles the mind. How many malls, churches, schools were within driving distance in that hour? I could have protected them all in addition to stopping every crime in the area because I had a gun one hour faster.

It ain't over yet. The bill that they defeated in the Senate will resurface in one form or another and a few (Democratic) Senators are realizing that people are REALLY pissed off at them for selling out. And the people's voices will eventually be heard. Believe it or not.
