Poll: Most voters reject adding state sales tax to Internet purchases

Source: UPI

U.S. voters, by a 56 percent-to-37 percent margin, oppose levying state sales tax on Internet purchases, a Quinnipiac University poll indicated.

Voters over the age of 65 said they favor taxing Internet sales, 49 percent to 45 percent, but all other demographic groups were opposed, survey results released Thursday indicated.

The Senate is scheduled to vote next week on a bill that would allow states to compel online retailers, regardless of their physical location, to collect state and local sales taxes for purchases made over the Internet and return those taxes to the states where a shopper lives. Currently, states can only require online stores to collect sales taxes if they also have a physical presence in the state.

Democrats were closely divided, with 46 percent saying they favored adding state sales tax to 45 percent opposed, the Hamden, Conn., university said. Republicans rejected the idea, with 33 percent saying they favored the levy and 61 percent saying they opposed.

is something new. We haven't ordered much but we haven't sent them the tax either. How are they going to be able to track this tax to each state? Just wondering.

I showed them. The credit card I use for Internet purchases is addressed in a state without those taxes.

Fuck you, Corbett and GOP.

But you have to pay a shipping fee with most internet purchases. So the price between the two is about the same on average. A tax would put internet at a disadvantage.

No reason you should not pay just because you bought on line.

Sales tax is a significant part of state and local budgeted revenues. The web has long been the consumers "Cayman Islands" way to avoid these taxes.

I see no reason to have a double standard. I don't think the rich and major companies should be allowed to "off shore" profits.

Consumers should not be allowed to "off state" their sales tax obligations.

All of these avoided obligations keep us from maintaining our roads and bridges, feeding the poor, etc.

5. Sales taxes are regressive.

They hurt the poor, the struggling working/middle class and seniors on fixed incomes.

Progressives should be against any sales taxes except on luxury-items.

Better to raise taxes on the marginal incomes of the wealthy.

I hope there are enough Democrats and Repuglicans in the Senate to kill this legislation.

What am I supposed to use for my boat payment? I don't use most of those roads. And..., and..., and I'm a law abiding citizen and have a gun, so I don't have any need for the police. My home is poured d concrete and granite, so what do I need with a fire department?
