Bush 43: 'History will ultimately judge ... I'm a content man'

Source: CNN

CNN's John King sat down with George and Laura Bush for a special private interview on the eve of the dedication of the George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum. CNN TV and CNN.com will cover the dedication live from Dallas on Thursday, April 25, beginning at 11 a.m. ET. For full coverage, watch CNN TV and follow online at CNN.com or via CNN's apps for iPhone, iPad and Android.

Dallas (CNN) -- George W. Bush is a proud new grandfather and fascinated by his unlikely new hobby: painting.

But some things haven't changed a bit: the trademark smirk when he is amused, a squinty glare when he doesn't appreciate the question -- and a quick turn to humor when the conversation turns to "legacy," including the scars of Iraq or the cloud of Katrina.

"History will ultimately judge the decisions that were made for Iraq and I'm just not going to be around to see the final verdict," the two-term president told CNN in a wide-ranging interview.

"In other words, I'll be dead."

As someone who never really wanted to DO the job from the beginning, he allowed the jackasses who had Iraq in their gun sites to take advantage of his father complex to do Iraq, without the first thought of the mess it possibly could be.

I think his mannerisms toward those people, like Cheney over time indicated that he knew it was an epic fuck up, and he kept them at arms length, and was much more careful about letting them direct him.

What I hear when he says this, is someone who knows in his heart that he was a flaming disaster, but does not want to experience the personal awareness of it while giving the middle finger to everyone.

At this point, he is more than content to die having denied the country the acknowledgement on this part for the disaster it was, how bad of a decision it was, and how horribly he led the country for 8 years.

It's still amazing that this idiot became his party's nominee in the first place, let alone president and a two term president at that.

Maybe Gore and Kerry would have put the nation to sleep (I find both to be boring speakers), but at least they wouldn't have taken the nation into two unwinnable wars and helped to destroy the economy.

It's there in the lack of requests for endorsements for Republican candidates running for office. The no-invites to Rethug conventions. He makes speeches at conservative events at private universities, churches and think tanks, but in any national political venue, he's toxic. No one will touch him no matter how blue his blood and how important his family is and that he was the fricking 43rd president. They'd rather be endorsed by head lice.

An unexamined life.

I would worry about the best possible President who wouldn't acknowledge any doubt or conflict, or show any signs of having taken his power and his decisions seriously. But in light of the disaster of this one's reign, to have not an inkling of conflict - geez, what a shallow, empty human being.

Allow me to cross-post this observation from another thread. The short version is that there shouldn't be any real debate about W's position in the latrine of American Presidents, because that poltroon managed to duplicate most of the worst offenses of other "worst" Presidents, exceeded them in magnitude and the damage caused, and got away with it all.

Ulysses S. Grant. Sold out to corrupt corporate interests; widespread corruption across his administration; his Vice President was guilty of awarding his own corporate interests with lucrative government contracts...

Just like George W. Bush.

Warren G. Harding. Scandalously leased government-owned lands, particularly oil-rich lands, to his corporate cronies. Held secret policy-formulation meetings with corporate interests, then fought disclosure...

...Just like George W. Bush.

James K. Polk. Lied to the public in order to spark a war under false pretenses, for reasons far more greedy than publicly stated...

...Just like George W. Bush.

Franklin Pierce. Disinterested, alcoholic, accused drunk driver...

...Just like his many-great grand-nephew, George W. Bush

Ronald Reagan. Not intellectually capable of doing the job, nor of policing his subordinates. Presided over the systematic violations of Congressional direction and the Constitution...

...Just like George W. Bush.

Richard Nixon. Attempted (and successful) election theft. Manipulated an intelligence agency as part of a larger series of cover-ups. Fought undeclared wars in secret. Underlings included Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld...

...Just like George W. Bush.

George W. Bush is the worst President ever, without question, and it should be without debate. Why? Because George W. Bush did all of the worst things that all of the worst Presidents have done, and screwed it up bigger, killed more people, ruined more lives, and stole more land and homes than any of them--and probably more than the rest of those chumps put together. You bring me any other "worst ever" candidate, name his five worst sins, and I can show you W. committing and getting away with the same sins, only worse. He was that bad.

George W. Bush was a shambling composite of every prior evil that ever shat upon the Presidency. Worst. President. Ever.
