Chinese troops camping in "Indian territory:" police

Source: Reuters

Several dozen Chinese soldiers have set up a remote camp some 10 km (6 miles) inside territory claimed by India in the high altitude Himalayan desert of Ladakh, Indian police sources said, in a possible return to border tension between the Asian giants.

An Indian foreign ministry spokesman said the two countries were in touch with each other to resolve the row. The ill-defined border has fuelled 50 years of mistrust despite blossoming economic ties.

The Indian army set up its own temporary camp just 500 meters (1600 feet) from the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) soldiers after the incident on April 15, a senior police official stationed close to the border told Reuters.

"The PLA pitched tents inside Indian territory and established temporary posts there", the official said, who asked not to be named because of the sensitivity of the matter. He said two helicopters gave support to the Chinese as they set up the camp on the Indian side of the disputed border. "On April 17, 5th Battalion of Ladakh Scouts was sent to the sector to take on the PLA challenge and they are also camping there now," the official said.

Reacting to the development, (Indian) government sources said, "This is an area where there have been differing perceptions of the Line of Actual Control (LAC). Incidents do occur and are resolved peacefully on the basis of bilateral agreements which exist and mechanisms provided for in these agreements. Both sides are in touch on this availing the Working mechanism for consultation and coordination on India-China border Affairs. We are confident that the current incident too will also be peacefully resolved."

Hopefully this will be resolved peacefully. Sure don't need another border war between those two big countries.

China has border disputes with 17 countries and they aspire to claim everything that was a part of China in the mind of Mao Tse Tung.

We need to stop emboldening China by shipping our jobs there.

Nukes pointed at two of them over the matter.

They got along with Nepal pretty nicely at least. Nepal seems to get along with everybody pretty nicely though.

India asks China to withdraw troops near disputed border

(AFP) / 23 April 2013

India’s foreign ministry said Tuesday it had asked China to withdraw troops who allegedly advanced into disputed territory claimed by New Delhi in a remote area of the Himalayas.

‘We have asked the Chinese side to maintain the status quo in this sector (of the western border),’ spokesman Syed Akbaruddin told a briefing. ‘By this I mean the status quo prior to this incident.’

He stressed that there were differing perceptions of the undefined border at the limit of the Buddhist-majority Indian region of Ladakh which is the source of friction between the neighbours.

He said that mechanisms existed to resolve border problems peacefully and that if troops were to come face-to-face ‘they shall exercise safe restraint and take all necessary steps to avoid an escalation of the situation’.

7. India, China begin withdrawing troops from border

NEW DELHI (AFP) — India and China withdrew troops Monday from a disputed area of the Himalayas after settling a border dispute, officials said, as the giant nuclear-armed neighbours took steps to ease tensions.

Foreign ministry spokesman Syed Akbaruddin said Foreign Minister Salman Khurshid would travel to Beijing as scheduled this Thursday where he would "discuss bilateral, regional and global issues of concern".

"The governments of India and China have agreed to restore the status quo along Line of Actual Control (LAC)," he told AFP, adding that talks between military officials were held to work out the logistics.

More than three weeks after Chinese troops were reported to have set up camp nearly 20 kilometres (12 miles) inside a region claimed by India, both sides reached an agreement late Sunday after a meeting between border commanders.
