POLICE CONVERGE ON NEIGHBORHOOD OUTSIDE BOSTON
Apr. 19 1:59 AM EDT
WATERTOWN, Mass. (AP) Police have converged on a neighborhood outside Boston where there were reports of explosives being detonated and police are telling reporters to turn off their cell phones.
Dozens of officers and National Guard members are in Watertown, where television outlets report that gunfire and explosions have been heard. A helicopter is circling overhead.
Authorities early Friday were calling for somebody to get on the ground and put their hands up and a loud thud was heard after someone shouted "fire in the hole."
Reporters are being told to move away from the scene. A police officer told a reporter: "If you want to live, turn off your cell phone."
Earlier Thursday night a campus police officer was shot and killed at MIT and authorities were searching for the person responsible.

Explosives Detonated in Massachusetts Standoff
By RAVI SOMAIYA
Published: April 19, 2013
Two young men, armed with guns and explosives in what appeared to be backpacks, engaged in a violent standoff with dozens of police on a street in Watertown, Mass., Thursday night, a resident said.
Police officers blocked off the scene of a shooting at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Mass.
Andrew Kitzenburg, 29, said he looked out of this third floor window to see two young men of slight build in jackets shooting at dozens of police officers from behind a black Mercedes SUV. The officers and the men were 70 yards apart, he said, and engaged in constant gunfire.
A police SUV drove towards the shooters, he said, and was shot at until it was severely damaged. It rolled out of control, Mr. Kitzenberg said, and crashed into two cars in his driveway.
The two shooters, he said, had a large and unwieldy bomb. They lit it, still in the middle of the gunfire, and threw it. But it went 20 yards at most. It exploded, he said, and one of the two men ran towards the gathered police officers. He was tackled, but it was not clear if he was shot, Mr. Kitzenberg said.
The other, he said, got back into the SUV, turned it towards officers and put the pedal to the metal. The car went right through the cops, broke right through and continued west.
The two men left a few backpacks right by the car, and there is a bomb robot out there now. Police had told residents to stay away from their windows, he said.

WATERTOWN, MA - At least one person was arrested in Watertown, Massachusetts early Friday morning and stripped naked before being taken into custody, CNN photojournalist Gabe Ramirez observed.
Dozens of police have rushed to the area just over two miles from Cambridge, said CNN's Drew Griffin, who was near the scene. A "very large event has taken place," Griffin said. There were reports that explosives were involved.
It is unclear if this arrest was related to the shooting at Massachusetts Institute of Technology campus or any other incident in Boston the area.

(36,437 posts)FBI is in Watertown (CORRECTION: FBI at MIT, not Watertown), which would signal that yes, Marathon related. But there is a dead cop involved, so the police presence might be related to that as well.

At least we are sure the explosion in Texas was just the incompetence of the owner and not terrorism (I guess you could label it corporate terrorism). I saw video this morning and the area was just leveled like a bomb had gone off. I feel bad for the people there who lost so many people and had so many injured.

(83,760 posts)With a bomb strapped to his chest, one of the Boston Marathon suspects was killed early Friday after he and his accomplice robbed a 7-Eleven, shot a police officer to death, carjacked an SUV and hurled explosives out the window in an extraordinary firefight with law enforcement, authorities told NBC News.
The second suspect the one in the white hat in photos released by the FBI was on the loose, and police ordered people in the Boston suburb of Watertown to stay in their homes and businesses not to open. Boston shut down its buses and subway system for the hunt.
The suspects are brothers with the last name Tsarnaez, law enforcement officials told NBC News. Two law enforcement officials told NBC News that both men had international ties, had been in the United States about a year, were in their early 20s and had military experience.
