Gulf countries meet over Iran nuclear radiation fears

* GCC says Iran has not responded to concerns raised over safety
(Reuters) - National emergency officials in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries met on Sunday in Saudi Arabia to discuss the risk of radiation spreading over the Gulf if Iran's Bushehr nuclear power plant is damaged by another earthquake.
<snip>
But the plant on earthquake-prone Iran's southern coast is a growing worry for its neighbours, because the prevailing winds of the Gulf mean that if radiation ever does escape it would probably be blown over the Qatari capital Doha and the main oil exporting ports of the United Arab Emirates.

Zayani said and the six Gulf Arab states have previously urged Tehran to ensure its facility complies with international safety standards and join the Convention on Nuclear Safety, but Tehran did not show any sign it understood international concerns over its nuclear programme.
Iran is the only country operating a nuclear power plant that does not belong to the convention, negotiated after the 1986 nuclear disaster in Chernobyl which contaminated a wide area and made 160,000 Ukrainians homeless

(27,509 posts)Gulf officials hold emergency meet over Irans nuclear proximity
Sunday, 14 April 2013
Al Arabiya -
Gulf environmental officials on Sunday held an emergency meeting in Saudi Arabias capital to discuss possible threats posed to surrounding Gulf countries by the Iranian nuclear plant in Bushehr.
<snip>
Experts who spoke to Al Arabiya said that what makes the situation worse is the movement of the Gulf waters. The waters current travels from the Iranian coast towards Gulf shores, meaning the water could carry nuclear waste resulting in possible environmental and oceanic disasters.
<snip>
The plant is 277 kilometers away from Kuwait, 300 kilometers away from Bahrain, 350 kilometers away from Iraq's southern city of Basra, about 410 kilometers away from the Qatari capital Doha, 600 kilometers away from the UAE's Abu Dhabi and about 620 kilometers away from the Saudi capital, Riyadh.
The plant poses a threat to these countries because it falls within a seismically active area; the aforementioned countries could be under the risk of being subjected to uranium and nuclear radiations leaks.
Tehran has repeatedly dismissed safety concerns over the Bushehr plant, which began operations in September 2011 after decades of delays.

(71 posts)This is ridiculous. You mean to tell me that the Gulf States are worried that Iranians can't control their nuclear power? Iran has the best engineers in the world! This is just harassing Iran and stirring up more fear to lay the goundwork for a war. Give me a break! I wish
that Iranian engineers had been in charge at Hanford all these years, we would be so much better off here in the Columbia Basin.

USA did propaganda for over a decade to get the world to accept their invasion and slaughter in Iraq.
Iraq was no threat to the world or their neighbors,
well, except when the USA funded the Iraq Iranian war way back when.
As George Carlin said "we can't stand not to be fuc*ing with somebody!"
Besides, USA has nukes in subs right in their gulf.
So who is the dangerous one?
