Russia To Vote Against 'One-Sided' UN Syria Resolution

Moscow will vote against a “contradictory” draft resolution on Syria, as its authors are seeking approval for “unilateral” action through the guise of the UN General Assembly, Russia’s Foreign Ministry has stated.

The draft was proposed by several UN member-states and is expected to be put to a vote shortly, the ministry said on Saturday; Moscow has criticized the resolution for being “one-sided.”

The draft resolution blames only the Syrian government for the tragic and bloody crisis in the conflict-torn republic. This is despite the Syrian opposition’s “illegal, including terrorist, actions,” the Foreign Ministry said, adding that many such violations had been confirmed by international organizations.

In addition, the draft “completely ignores” the external logistical and financial support that the Syrian rebels already receive.

gross violations continue to be committed by government forces, Amnesty International’s research points to an escalation in abuses by armed opposition groups, which have increasingly resorted to hostage taking and to the torture and summary killing of soldiers, pro-government militias and civilians.

In a recent briefing, Summary Killings and other abuses by armed opposition groups, the organization documented dozens of such cases. Amnesty International has most recently documented violations by Syrian security forces and pro-government militias in the briefing, Government bombs rain on civilians, in a long line of reports highlighting targeting of civilians, arbitrary arrest, torture and other ill-treatment, enforced disappearances, extrajudicial executions and other abuses since the start of the Syrian uprising in March 2011.

While the Syrian government has committed the 'vast majority' of war crimes, it should not be 'solely' blamed for the violence. There is no need for the draft resolution to be one-sided - just honest.

as a political tool to justify the actions of one side over the other. I think the U.N. has become useless now, because certain countries have used it that way. Especially countries with too much influence in the U.N. Instead of advocating peace, it has been used as a means to justify War. Maybe that part of its authority needs to be reviewed. It was intended to prevent Wars and not start them or support them. If I'm not mistaken, the first time the U.N. was used in this way, might have been the Korean War, while the Russians were apparently protesting.

Especially when it comes to places they get gas. Funny RT doesn't mention that.
