PYONGYANG, North Korea (AP) - North Korea delivered a fresh round of rhetoric Thursday with claims it had "powerful striking means" on standby for a launch, while Seoul and Washington speculated that the country is preparing to test a medium-range missile during upcoming national celebrations.
On the streets of Pyongyang, meanwhile, North Koreans celebrated the anniversary of leader Kim Jong Un's appointment to the country's top party post - one in a slew of titles collected a year ago in the months after father Kim Jong Il's death.
The Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Fatherland, a nonmilitary agency that deals with relations with South Korea, didn't elaborate on its warning of a strike. The statement is the latest in a torrent of warlike threats seen outside Pyongyang as an effort to raise fears and pressure Seoul and Washington into changing their North Korea policy.
Officials in Seoul and Washington say Pyongyang appears to be preparing to test-fire a medium-range missile designed to reach the U.S. territory of Guam in the Pacific Ocean.

(2,805 posts)All of this could just be a prelude to a missile test to celebrate the anniversary, but Pyongyang is burning up a lot of political capital for just another missile test.
I've also read that food supplies run short as Spring approaches and this sort of nationalistic/jingoistic talk takes the peoples' minds off of their empty stomachs (so it happens this time just about every year, though not so often these Nuculear threats).

(413 posts)Your not saying that the Kim dynasty has been and is currently in cahoots with the US government are you? I would find that extremely far fetched... and are you saying that the POTUS is in on it? What about China and Russia with their consternation and angst over the DPRK now? They are part of this devious cabal, too? I find your theory nonsensical.

(1,020 posts)But I'll do you one better. This so-called "north korea" crisis (I mean really, they expect me to believe such a place even exists?) just happens to coincide with the West Dingleberry special election for town-improvement-secretary. If you believe that's a coincidence, you really did just fall off the turnip truck. Everybody in the world knows that if Dan "Big Potato" Di Pippo gets elected, the sewage treatment improvement bonds are a goner. It's obvious that this "north korea" crisis was ginned up to distract Dingleberryites from the election and drive down voter turnout, letting big Dan just slide on in to office with his nefarious agenda. Wake up America!
