GRAHAM, Wash. - An explosion and fire at the home of Josh Powell has killed two children and an adult male believed to be Powell and his two young sons, officials say.
The explosion shook the normally quiet cul-de-sac neighborhood at about 12:30 p.m. Sunday, and flames roared through the home near the intersection of 182nd Street and 84th Avenue.
Firefighters rushed to the scene after receiving multiple frantic 911 calls, where they found two young victims and an adult male victim.
Graham Deputy Chief Gary Franz said it's believed that the victims are Josh Powell and his two young sons.
Powell's wife Susan disappeared in December 2009 under suspicious circumstances while the couple was living in Utah, and he lost custody of his two sons last year.

The maternal grandparents said they always feared something like this.
What the hell happened? Who was supposed to be supervising the visits?

God, this is just so unutterably sad. Those poor little guys! Words fail...

(28,498 posts)Graham Fire and Rescue Chief Gary Franz told The Associated Press that the explosion occurred moments after a Child Protective Services worker brought the two boys to the home for a supervised visit. He said Powell let the boys in the house, then blocked the social worker from entering.
The social worker called her supervisors to report that she could smell gas, and the home exploded.

(21,675 posts)...Jeffrey Bassett, who represented Powell in the custody case, said he received a brief email from his client just minutes before Powell and the two boys died. It said, "I'm sorry, goodbye."
The email arrived at 12:05 p.m. Sunday, about 10 minutes before the explosion, but he didn't see it until two hours later, when others told him Josh and the boys had been killed. He said he knew Josh was upset after being ordered to undergo a psycho-sexual evaluation recently, but he didn't see this coming.
Sounds like he knew his goose was cooked.

I'm not going to encourage this behavior and neither should you.

(49,212 posts)Generally if there's some expectation that the family will be reunified, they'll start moving toward lower supervision, sometimes with a trusted adult who isn't involved with the system like a relative. When there's some question about the situation or a safety concern a neutral site and a neutral supervisory party will be used. I did that work for a while, and it broke my heart every day.

From what I understand, the case worker was there, but he took the boys into the house and slammed the door on her. Then he filled the house with gas and blew it up.

The young sons of Susan and Josh Powell, who died with their father when he ignited an explosion in their Washington home, were beginning to verbalize that their mother was in the trunk of their father's car on the night that she disappeared in 2009, a lawyer for the missing woman's parents said.
Attorney Steve Downing told the Associated Press that Braden and Charles Powell, who were 2 and 4 at the time of Susan Powell's disappearance, were beginning to tell their grandparents details about the night that their father took them on a late-night camping trip during a blizzard, including the fact that their mother disappeared after leaving in the car with their father.
"They were beginning to verbalize more," Downing said. "The oldest boy talked about that they went camping and that mommy was in the trunk. Mom and dad got out of the car and mom disappeared."
Sgt. Mike Powell of the West Valley City Police Department in Utah did not return phone calls inquiring about the children's assertions about their mother's presence on the December 2009 camping trip, AP reported.

(1,197 posts)I really do not understand why this man had access to those two little boys. If it was absolutely necessary, why not at a neutral place? He was a person of interest in his wife's disappearance, his father used his computer to view child porn, and his binoculars/camera to peek through unsuspecting neighbor's windows in the same home with the children. There have been altogether too many "mistakes" made by judges and DHSH that put children in harm's way. It seems systemic. Something should be done so that this kind of thing, and all of the other harmful things, cannot happen to children in questionable circumstances.
And for those readers who don't know or care about this case, skip the thread. Those of us who do know of it are heartsick, and wish to express that sorrow and outrage here.
