F.B.I. Looking Into Allegations That McConnell’s Campaign Was Wiretapped
Source: NYT
The Federal Bureau of Investigation said it was looking into allegations by Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky that political opponents bugged his campaign headquarters.
Mr. McConnell, the Republican leader in the Senate, blamed the political left for an anonymous recording of a meeting at his campaign headquarters that appeared on the Web site of Mother Jones, a liberal magazine, on Tuesday morning. The recording captures Mr. McConnell and his aides outlining possible attacks on potential opponents, especially the actress Ashley Judd.
They were bugging our headquarters, a quite Nixonian move, Mr. McConnell said at a news conference on Tuesday. This is what you get from the political left in America these days.
As yet, Mr. McConnell faces no serious challenge to his seat, but the 12-minute tape of a Feb. 2 meeting in Louisville suggests his team was ready, with opposition research gathered by aides to Mr. McConnells campaign and Senate office.

(725 posts)I think you're right on it. It gets out their smears for free - every newscast (all channels) is covering it. Lots of free advertising.
As the most unpopular Republican in the Senate, he might garner some sympathy for enduring this at the hands of those unscrupulous, immoral Democrats. Nobody loves playing victim more than Republicans. The GOP eats that stuff up.
Then, as pay back to David Corn for the 47% tape, they feed it to him and Mother Jones.

(7,403 posts)Against unnamed Democrats. It is time for him to put up or shut up. Who, McConnell, are you saying is responsible, when was the bug planted and where within the office was it located. And when and how was it removed. Do you have one scintilla of evidence to support this wild, irresponsible charge? I thought not. Besides, I would think that from the loudness of the voices on the tape you could determine the general location of where the recording was made. Just like the 47% tape, this is almost certainly some kind of inside job -- a disgruntled employee or part of the service team.
