Baucus Open To Filibustering Gun Bill Debate
Source: TPM
Sen. Max Baucus (D-MT), who is up for reelection in 2014, kept his options open Tuesday to filibuster debate on gun control legislation, even as numerous Republicans said they'll vote to begin debate.
"I want to see what's before the Senate. I don't know what's in the bill," Baucus told reporters in the Capitol. "My primary focus is the people of Montana. They're my employers."
TPM pressed him on whether he'll vote for a motion to begin debate.
"That's to be determined," he said. "My primary emphasis is the people I work for, and that's Montanans."

(6,008 posts)... a lot to get on the floor of the senate and publicly rail against regulations supported by 90% of the public...
Oh wait, they won't have to. Fuck you Harry Reid, you and the other spineless democrats who opposed filibuster reform.

(31,987 posts)Depending on what and how a question is asked you could get 90% of the executive staff of the NRA to say they favor "gun control".

(21,475 posts)It has been very steady over the last several weeks. OVER 90% favor background checks....There is different results for other aspects of the gun safety discussion now going on, but background checks is favored by almost all..

(31,987 posts)As I said it depends on what is in the question that is asked. The issue is making a record of those checks and thus creating a national gun registry. Like everything in life the devil is in the details. You may favor a national registration. I don't.

(3,731 posts)Montana has a long and rich firearms history, maybe Sen. Baucus is just doing what his constituents want him to do, I have no idea as I don't live there.

(34,825 posts)what about IWR? it's a chickenshit excuse these fuckers use when they're too scared to do the right thing. they don't give two fucking shits about their constituents. they care about the green, and that's it. moreover, if his constituents don't want it, then he can simply vote NO. this shitlump doesn't even want any debate to reach the floor.

They belong in the Philippines where 70 percent of the people have guns, including children.
Watch the new HBO series VICE...this week it shows what the Philippine people do and how much they love their guns.
I pity America....The country is turning into the Philippines.

(19,233 posts)Then we can get a nice, new Republican from Montana in office.
I'm sure that would make everyone very happy, right? Right?
Face it, he's a Democratic Senator from a historically red state. The fact that he was elected at all was a bit of a shock at the time. It's either him, someone just like him, or a Republican. There is almost no one in political office in Montana would could support gun control and win in his state.
I'm constantly amazed by people here who expect every Democratic legislator from every corner of the US to have the exact same viewpoint on topics like guns. A Democratic senator from rural Montana is not going to see gun control the same way a Democratic senator from inner-city Chicago will. The outrage in this thread over his stance is exactly why I'm so grateful they dropped their push for a federal assault weapons and high-cap mag ban; with that in the bill we as a party would have to kiss many seats in red and purple states like Montana goodbye for a long, long time to come.
The only reason we have held control of the Senate is because the party worked hard to recruit pro gun Democrats in Red states and supported them to win and hold their seats.
Now everybody wants 100% lock step agreement on gun control.
Would you rather give up the Senate and maybe even lose seats in the House in 2014? But you'll be pure of heart?
Or keep the Senate, and maybe even take back the house with some less than "pure" Dems?
Now let's all sit back and applaud Bloomberg as he runs ads against Dems in primaries and general elections, if they don't agree with his version of gun control.

I'd rather leave politics out of this issue, frankly.
Either our elected officials will rise to do as their constituents ask, or they will support the NRA, follow Their demands and then there will be political backlash or not.

I believe Baucus also carries an "A" or "A+" rating from NRA?
A "Democrat" he is not--just "self-labled" himself as one.
