Abortion legislation sent to Alabama governor

Source: CNN

Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley is expected to sign a bill passed by the Legislature that would toughen standards for abortion clinics and make it a felony for anyone other than a physician to perform an abortion, a spokesman said Wednesday.

The bill would require doctors at the clinics to ask pregnant minors seeking an abortion under age 16 about who's the father, according to a summary of the legislation provided by House Speaker Mike Hubbard's office.

The pregnant minor would be able to refuse to give the father's name and age, the proposed law says.

If the girl provides the name and the father is two or more years older than the girl, the facility would have to report the pregnant girl and father to police, the legislation says. The legislation is designed to prevent abuse.

States that have passed laws undermining Roe v. Wade, since 2011:
- Alabama already banned abortions after 20 weeks in the same "fetal pain" standard that Texas is desiring.
- Arkansas
- Idaho (law suspended by federal court)
- Mississippi
- North Dakota
- Virginia via "Targeted Regulations of Abortion Providers" aka TRAP

Governor of Texas Rick Perry has also stated that he will do anything possible to restrict abortion in his state, including so-called fetal pain bills.

On a happier note Washington state is considering requiring insurance companies to pay for elective abortions.

are:

1) Requiring docs who perform abortions to have admitting privileges at a local hospital This is virtually impossible. As in Mississippi where docs at the one remaining abortion provider in Jackson, have been refused by all 7 hospitals, no hospital will grant admitting privileges.

2) Requiring abortion clinics to meet the same standards as ambulatory surgical clinics, including building, equipment, staffing, location, parking and on and on. These measures are prohibitively expensive.

These are TRAP laws. (Targeted Regulation of Abortion Providers) They are far more effective at eliminating abortion than the personhood and heartbeat crap.

The crazy right wing religionists have been pushing for abortion restrictions for decades. They will get even more restrictions passed in the State...no doubt about it. We fight but it is useless. In the end the legality of this will be challenged and decided by the SC, I assume.

Let me make a very honest point. I have three daughters. If any of my three daughters need an abortion they will get one. They will get a safe, professional abortion in a hospital or clinic by a competent professional. How can I be so sure? Well, because I will drive or fly them to a state where this will happen. Simple as that.

Now, let's be clear. I'm a liberal with modest means who is saying outright that my children will not be denied. I know that conservatives with modest means who support such crazy anti-choice legislation will also make sure their daughters and/or wives will be able to get an abortion (and believe me they will). Who does this hurt the most? The poorest in our state, that's who. In Alabama, that means that a very very large portion of the population will be hurt by anti-choice legislation. The bible thumping tsk-tskers who have money to fly their daughter to Atlanta will be inconvenienced.

Stupid, stupid State.
