N.Y. Rep. Carolyn Maloney says she has received death threats...over her support for gun control

N.Y. Rep. Carolyn Maloney says she has received death threats at her Manhattan office over her support for gun control legislation
The Democratic congresswoman introduced a bill last week which would require weapons owners to hold liability insurance, similar to what car owners are required to purchase. The callers, Maloney said, forced her to miss an awards dinner.
Despite the death threats, Rep. Carolyn Maloney said she is moving forward with her bill calling for gun owners to have liability insurance.
Rep. Carolyn Maloney said she received death threats Tuesday at her upper East Side office warning her not to move forward with gun control legislation.
They said they were going to kill me, said Maloney. The Democratic congresswoman was so disturbed by the three menacing phone calls which came about an hour apart that she skipped a dinner Tuesday night of the Friends of the Upper East Side Historic Districts, where she was supposed to present an award. I couldnt go. Who knows what could happen? Maloney told the Daily News. I think any member of Congress would be scared after what happened to my good friend Gabby Giffords....

(3,731 posts)That's a brilliant idea!
Hey, while we're at it, lets classify anyone with a gun as a terrorist, ok?
Of course you'll provide links to the proof that these "NRAgun people" are the ones threatening her, right?

(3,731 posts)And what does he have to do with this thread?
Do you want all 4.5 million NRA members classified as terrorists?
Do you know it those sending the threats are NRA members? If so, can you provide the proof?
BTW, most members of the NRA are in favor of more stringent gun control laws, it's the batshit crazy board members that aren't.
I wouldn't worry too much about Ms. Maloney, the Secret Service is pretty darned good at tracking down those that threaten Federal lawmakers and they're not known for their sense of humor.

(11,464 posts)and the guns will be gone in a few years, decade.
It's over for the guns and bullets.
90% of people used to smoke, 90% don't.
and the day is fast approaching where it will be.
Too bad thousands will still die and millions be affected by guns/bullets in the hands of private citizens.
Hobbyists can find another hobby.
Those that need to use it for food can use a bow and arrow (or be given a stipend to go to the market).
Those that collect, can purchase baseball cards.
BTW, if every single politician who is a democratic party serving or thinking of running needs secret service, that would add hundreds of billions to the cost.
Simpler to just get rid of private citizens guns and bullets.
All it takes is ONE SCOTUS and guns/bullets MAY be history.
Might take two or three or four, but it is as inevitable now as having a Black President,
which ten years ago, after the haters smeared Jesse Jackson, was thought to be impossible.
In 1991, who thought TWO Clinton's would be President?
And in 1959, who thought there would be a civil rights/ voting rights bills signed?

They're killing and threatening prosecutors in Texas, and threatening New York representatives. North Carolina and Mississippi are trying to nullify federal law. These people are a bunch of treasonous assholes.

Which is as good a place as any to insert a warning to DUers who support gun control: never, EVER volunteer anything beyond vague personal details about yourself on-line. No sense in asking for trouble from individuals who own firearms and who want to use them in the worst possible way.
Never give out personal info to anyone on a discussion board that can potentially ID yourself.

There have been a few DUers who had troubles with this in the past, iirc...

(6,852 posts)Some one who is really planning this kind of atrocity doesn't give you advanced warning.
that's all it is, and I suspect that the Secret Service already know who these assholes are and will shortly recieve a very unpleasant visit from them, after all, it is a federal offense to threaten a federal official.

(15,189 posts)Dr. Tiller just should have ignored his threats too, because they are ONLY threats. No one really goes through with it if they warn you.

Because of events like Dr. Tiller's assassination you take it seriously. I hope the people who made the threats against the Congresswomen are A. Found B. Get long prison terms.

(34,582 posts)very true. The inmates are taking over the asylum.
"The Democratic congresswoman introduced a bill last week which would require weapons owners to hold liability insurance, similar to what car owners are required to purchase."
If its similar to the liability insurance car owners are required to buy, its only required for those who carry in public, right?
One is not required to have liability insurance for simple car ownership.
Politicalboi
(15,189 posts)If my car that I never drive, one day slips into gear and runs over a the kids who were playing with it, I better have insurance. Same with your guns. You have kids, you pay through the nose for insurance. And they should be able to take away guns if it is found your child has a mental condition. Adam Lanza's mother NEVER should have been able to own a firearm. Hopefully in the future they will look at the ENTIRE family for a background check. Dad, mom, brother, sister.
beevul
(12,194 posts)Once again, the point was that as usual, the comparison is made between usage in public, versus simple ownership.
And what about after your kids are grown and moved out, like mine are? Should someone with a child who is grown up and moved out be subject to a lifelong prohibition of firearm possession due to a condition they themselves don't even have?
I don't agree that Adam lanzas mother should have never been able to own a firearm. I do think that adam himself should never have had access to them, however.
As far as cars go...since 1969 all gm vehicles and most others, have had a column lock, which keeps automatic transmission equipped cars in park. They generally don't "slip into gear". Manual transmission vehicles, on the other hand, could slip out of gear...but then...if you're deliberately parking an unused vehicle in an unsecure location on a hill or grade, and allowing kids to play in on or around it...maybe you do need insurance.

(7,142 posts)not the hunters etc. They live every day in fear.
On our local chat site several talked about keeping loaded guns hidden throughout their house in the event of an intruder. They deny living in fear, nevertheless.
I quit hunting 30 years ago and gave away or sold my guns. Some people feel the need to pack wherever they go, so sad.

Cops were at her Manhattan home and her office Tuesday night, she said. The NYPD confirmed detectives are investigating the threats. Maloney said police were checking to see if the calls answered by staffers, including an unpaid intern could be traced and were reviewing security in her office.
Other news outlets are reporting there were up to four separate incoming calls taken by staff, including the intern.
