Robertson: God gives less miracles to ‘too-educated Americans’ who learn science
By David Edwards
Monday, April 1, 2013 14:19 EDT

Televangelist Pat Robertson on Monday explained to his viewers that “sophisticated” Americans received less miracles because they had learned “things that says God isn’t real” like evolution.

On Monday’s episode of CBN’s The 700 Club, Robertson responded to a viewer who wanted to know why “amazing miracles (people raised from the dead, blind eyes open, lame people walking) happen with great frequency in places like Africa, and not here in the USA?”

“People overseas didn’t go to Ivy League schools,” the TV preacher laughed. “We’re so sophisticated, we think we’ve got everything figured out. We know about evolution, we know about Darwin, we know about all these things that says God isn’t real.”

“We have been inundated with skepticism and secularism,” he conintued. “And overseas, they’re simple, humble. You tell ‘em God loves ‘em and they say, ‘Okay, he loves me.’ You say God will do miracles and they say, ‘Okay, we believe him.’”

It's funny. The scientist who finally found the Higgs-Boson wanted to call it the goddamned particle.
In his popular book The God Particle: If the Universe is the Answer, What is the Question?, first published in 1993, American physicist Leon Lederman (writing with Dick Teresi) explained why he’d chosen this title:

"This boson is so central to the state of physics today, so crucial to our final understanding of the structure of matter, yet so elusive, that I have given it a nickname: the God Particle. Why God Particle? Two reasons. One, the publisher wouldn’t let us call it the Goddamn Particle, though that might be a more appropriate title, given its villainous nature and the expense it is causing. And two, there is a connection, of sorts, to another book, a much older one…"

It says that the Bible isn't literally true, and that the Monotheistic conception of God does not jibe with science. All of which threatens the legitimacy of huckster evangelical christianity.

We don't "receive" miracles because science allows us to understand that things which we previously thought were miracles ARE NOT MIRACLES.

69. Fortunately Robertson does not speak for all Christians......
Tue Apr 2, 2013, 05:41 AM
Apr 2013

I am a Christian and, at least in my faith tradition, we encourage education and self-development.

We believe that while there may be some things that evade human development and understanding, e.g. "why does the universe exist" even if we eventually solve the "what got the big bang going in the first place", man is an intelligent being.

We have no problem reconciling the theory of evolution with the concept of creation. We recognize that it would be a truly dull and uninspiring universe if living creatures did not evolve over time, constantly improving and adapting.

That is not at odds with our belief that life after this one is not earned but rather a gift received as a result of faith and acceptance. We also believe that God has and does perform miracles.

But we also believe that some of those miracles are accomplished through the science and learning of man as man has strived to learn and understand and solve problems.

So Robertson's "blind faith" while attacking educated persons who strive to learn and understand the world around them is not familiar to me. But it is certainly an approach to Christianity (and certainly Islam) that is pushed by many Christian so-called leaders and followed by millions of individuals.

... in that, if pressed, he could explain away his statement thusly.

But, yeah, I think he really meant it the way you suggest.

At the same time as they believe that intelligent people get fewer miracles from God, they simultaneously believe they are blessed by God. If they believe Robertson's premise, then logically they should believe that God thinks they are stupid. However, it doesn't matter: Robertson's suckers are stupid.

humans intelligence and an inquiring mind when he "fashioned" them, Mr. Robertson? If so, God made a serious error. Or maybe God likes to give humans abilities and then forbid their use. A cruel God or a God with bad judgment. Hmmmmm! I don't think I like Mr. Robertson's god.

that after decades of bull, millions of people still listen to you,

the miracle is, after decades of bull from your mouth,
that you still rake in millions of 'donations,'
and the media still gives you a forum for you to spew your bullshit.

The miracle is that you still get away with it,
while I still await the crowds with pitchforks to deal with you.

the miracle is: that God has a good laugh at your expense. She thinks you are a hilarious buffoon.

Once I realized the tooth-fairy was a scam, I stopped getting money under my pillow in exchange for my baby teeth at night. At least that lie my parents told me resulted in money in my pocket, instead of a collection plate being passed around!

I was picking up after my golden retriever Dexie and I thought I saw the face of Jesus in his poop. Upon closer examination it turned out he had eaten my grandsons Picachu figure and part of the little buggers face was peering at me out of the pile. So much for miracles Pat!

so I guess he's another godless Ivy League apostate.

Also, that means Gee Dubya Boosh** '68 might actually have competition for the title of Dumbest Yalie Ever.

I doubt Marion or Gee Dubya could even spell cum laude.

I suspect he was gently poking fun at his own Ivy League background in that faux folksy, self-deprecating manner he affects (again, much like Gee Dubya).

if not, we'll be suffering at The Game in the Bowl yet another year (and the next weekend I always attend T'giving where my ex husband, dressed in outlandish outfits that he gets from the Harvard Coop, tells me once again that I should just "give up" on ever winning the Game again). And I didn't even go to Yale...
