shocked by incidents like this. The death of this child can most likely be laid at the doorstep of an irresponsible gun owner. Gun ownership must come along with responsible behavior. Irresponsible gun owners belong in jail.

Edit to add:
The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. The time has come to stop treating incidents like this as tragic accidents. There is nothing accidental about this death. It is negligent homicide. Until authorities start to treat incidents like this as a crime, young children will continue to shoot themselves or others. Adults are expected to protect the young, not enable incidents like this.

I've never understood how this stuff happens. I mean, I do understand...basically there's a stupid adult somewhere. But are these people not only leaving guns out where a child can get to them, are they also leaving them on some kind of hair trigger setting? I know when I'm at the firing range, it takes a little effort to squeeze that trigger on my Rugar 38. And it's damn near impossible for me to get the first shot off on my husband's 9mm without pulling the barrel back.

I'd like to see murder charges filed against the owner for shit like this.

It's negligence.

Possibly criminal negligence.

Someone left that gun in the car, loaded. Should be held accountable.
If that state has a law against a kid being left unattended in a vehicle, responsible adult needs to be held accountable as well.

Possible the two failure points are one and the same person, possible they are not.

As this shows.

The owner may have had a perfectly understandable reason for having one.

But pro-gun activists and gun nuts who own guns for political reasons or to feel "macho" ignore the reality of guns as a dangerous device that's designed to kill as efficiently as possible.

They're made to seem like playthings and the ultimate defense. Enough. Ban the damn things and create rules for how often they can be onscreen during entertainment.
