"Red Line Has Been Crossed" In Syria, Rogers Says
Source: CBS NEWS
(CBS News) There's mounting evidence that over the last two years the Assad regime has used "at least a small quantity" of chemical weapons against rebel forces in Syria's raging civil war, House Intelligence Committee chair Mike Rogers, R-Mich., said today on "Face the Nation," adding that the time is now for U.S. intervention.
Amid debate over an alleged chemical weapons attack out of Syria last week, President Obama during a visit to Israel doubled down on his claim that such an attack would be considered a "game changer" for his administration, but qualified that it's important to find out "precisely whether or not this red line was crossed" before making a decision that could lead to an act of war.
"I think that it is abundantly clear that that red line has been crossed," Rogers said. "There is mounting evidence that it is probable that the Assad regime has used at least a small quantity of chemical weapons during the course of this conflict."
Though a senior administration official has said intelligence this week suggests weaponized chemicals were not used in the recent strike, Rogers said the fact that President Bashar al-Assad has ordered scud missile attacks on civilians "in and of itself should prompt action." The "wholesale slaughter" of Syrian rebels and civilians, he said, "is now spilling up to the doorstep of Israel."

(1,150 posts)this situation is different. If we knew, really knew, what was coming in Rwanda, for example, should we have stopped it? The Syrian civil war is a god-awful mess, with the growing possibility of at least a partial end in sight. The thing that worries us most about it is the presence of basically professional mercenaries motivated by extreme religious beliefs among the rebels. They're there and they're some of the best fighters in the conflict. The vast majority of the rebels don't share their beliefs, but they have been desperate and seen the value of their battle prowess.
Chemical weapons use or not, the ugliness of the short-term outcome of this conflict is something we may be able to mitigate substantially. There will be reprisal massacres, and they won't be moderate in scope. We may be able to prevent some of the worst of them, and possibly prevent the country from going the way of (yes I recognize the irony) of Iraq. If it is possible for us to do it, I believe we should.

(23,867 posts)I know i was. When Reagan took office, I was partying. I knew he was a disaster, but I didn't know what the long term losses could be.
We have the Constitution. We could be something great. But greedy, sick people have derailed it to their advantage, whatever the cost. And those living their lives, even if they want to know the truth, have a hard time finding it.
The FCC is part of the problem.
Election fraud.
Election financing is a disaster.
Subsidizing the military economy is a disaster.
The people are scattered.

(106,886 posts)And if there is "mounting evidence that it is probable", which sounds pretty vague to me, that should be passed on to the President, Sec. of State, etc. Not run out on a TV talk show. Par for the course from the Republican House.

(11,843 posts)Another presumptive test that fails to be confirmed on page 27 or 2AM? We have been down this road before where Rethugs scream in the media whenever a test swab turns color, but specific tests fail to find a thing. My sister still doubts me when I tell her that no "WMD" were ever found in Iraq. She wants to believe what the right-wing media feeds her.

Plus. this CBS report's writing is in the same childish league, what with its use of the phrase "doubled down" as a verb. Gee, how "hip" and "trendy" is that, right? Where's the "like" button?
