Monsanto's Death Patents
Source: Truth-Out
Monsanto has yet another case pending in the court system, this time before the U.S. Supreme Court on the exclusivity of its genetically modified seed patents. Narrowly at issue is whether Monsanto retains patent rights on soybeans that have been replanted after showing up in generic stocks rather than being sold specifically as seeds, or whether those patent rights are exhausted after the initial planting. But more broadly the case also raises implications regarding control of the food supply and the patenting of life questions that current patent laws are ill-equipped to meaningfully address.

These bastards represent so much of what is wrong with corporate control.
They are so good at winning their cases involving patent infringement (innocent farmers losing control due to infestation of their crops beyond their control). Why cannot someone approach this from the standpoint that Monsanto is not maintaining control of their seeds and, as a result, is corrupting farms with genetically modified mutations.
Sort of how a dog owner can be sued if his dog runs out into traffic and causes a wreck.

Thanks!

We've seen similar scenarios in the past, events in which the massive financial power of multi-national corporations is able to buy out legislators who were elected to represent' voters. But now, Monsanto has set the bar even higher. Instead of just getting a few kickbacks or avoiding USDA regulation, Monsanto lobbyists have gone as far as to generate legislative inclusions into a new bill that puts Monsanto above the federal government.

(6,002 posts)be, it is no longer recognizable.
When a corporation now seemingly owns the food supply, and it is a disease inducing, tumor growing, life killing monster, it's criminal. They spread their GMO while it stamps out life giving sustenance, at the approval of our highest court.
Their products should be labeled with skull and crossbones and come with the same warning as poison or cigarettes at the very least. It's an abomination that they are not required to the same scrutiny as drugs and pharmaceuticals, insecticides are nearer to what they are.

(10,597 posts)... They got away scot-free with privatizing the most precious item of our commons: Our food supply. They should be stopped dead in their tracks right now. They should be put out of business once and for all for this particular diabolical type of privatizing.
Since the people apparently don't know the meaning of the term commons, including evidently our elected officials, a list of commons needs to be agreed upon and a law passed to protect them from the greedy vulture Corporatistas.
Corporations need to be about the business of inventing things to make life better for human beings in the world, NOT about the business of raping the earth and everything that moves, not about changing the effing DNA of all plants and animals.

But now, Monsanto has set the bar even higher. Instead of just getting a few kickbacks or avoiding USDA regulation, Monsanto lobbyists have gone as far as to generate legislative inclusions into a new bill that puts Monsanto above the federal government.
Its called the Monsanto Protection Act among activists and concerned citizens who have been following the developments on the issue, and it consists of a legislative rider inside (Farmer Assurance Provision, Sec. 735) a majority-wise unrelated Senate Continuing Resolution spending bill. You may already be aware of what this rider consists of, but in case not you will likely be blown away by the tenacity of Monsanto lobbyist goons.
If this rider passes with the bill, which could be as early as this week, Monsanto would have complete immunity from federal courts when it comes to their ability to act against any new Monsanto GMO crops that are suspected to be endangering the public or the environment (or considered to be planted illegally by the USDA). Were talking about courts that literally can do nothing to Monsanto if its found that their newest creation may be promoting cancer, for example. Whether its a GMO banana or an apple, Monsanto could continue planting the food abomination all it wants under court review.
Food Democracy Now has launched a petition on the subject, explaining:

(22,651 posts)Then we have the problem of the chemical drift from monsantos resistant crops.
They don't contain the roundup, agent orange and other toxic chemicals the resistant crops allow them to spray in open air.
Citizens should sue monsanto to pay for all health concerns caused from these products use.
